Can any one please advise on the best paint primer to use on a Lister D? I would normally use red oxide but I'm unsure about its heat resisting properties.

any good quality red oxide primer. I've heard of people talking about screwfix's one. I personaly use a spray one as it's easier.

Screwfix no bollox red oxide, brush it on and that way you can get a good cover and fill any small pits with the paint, rubs down well. Spray paint is ok for a top coat but you will find brushing the primer followed by sprayed top coat a lot better.

Rustins red oxide is the stuff I use, it has excellent coverage and dries fairly flat. I have used it on around 15 engines over the years with no problems.
I tried using spray primer before but I have found that it may look good when first applied but it can soften when applying the topcoat.

Thanks for all the help. I've now bought a small tin of Hammerite red oxide and coated an old piece of cast iron with it. I shall run it through the dish washer a few times and see how it stands up.

Christ! What are you going to do to this D? Don't forget primer is porous and will soak up water or oil, the only thing that stops this happening is the gloss you put over it.

Thanks Villiers for the warning. I didn't know that. However, its come through its first wash completely unscathed. I think I'll trust it not to peel or flake off the Lister now. I was more concerned with the heat coming under the paint rather than the effects on the surface if you see what I mean.

I know what you mean, it will be fine just don't use it on the exhaust as it will come off that.
