To paint or not to paint
This may have been brought up before but I cant find anything so just putting out feelers to see what I get back.
My Lister D is all painted and looking good, new transfers on and give it a great finishing touch. Now I am thinking shall I paint the raised lettering on the cylinder with maybe a yellow or gold enamel paint or leave it brunswick green
I got a set of wheels looking nice also painted in B green but im thinking of running some red in the holes (each wheel has I think its six holes, not spokes if that makes sense) Has anyone done this and got any pictures of the end results.
Maybe I just got too much time on my hands and need another project, its much better than painting the house

Re: To paint or not to paint
My views on painting are that if I buy an engine that runs but is untidy I service the engine and give the bodywork a good wash and display it in its working clothes, if it needs to be taken apart for major work I will then repaint the engine but and again my opinion the lettering where never highlighted by the factory and I think it spoils the look as do brass tank straps, as has already been said its your engine etc.

Was all the thing back in the late 70's early 80's, personally I think it looks gash.

That doesn't look so bad, it's when they start picking out casting numbers and nuts, bolts and washers it really does look gash

Depends on how much bling you like!! I often wondered about painting the letters, then thought that these engines never left the factory with them painted.

You seem to see 3 types at shows
The oily rag/barnfind finish type
The restored to "as it left the factory" finish
And the "showmans" (for want of a better term) finish with picked out highlights, polished copper/brass etc.
I think the different finishes appeal to different folks, the "showmans" finish probably appeals more to Joe Public?

I would add one more, the Rat look where absolutely nothing has been done apart from oil, water and petrol.

Re: To paint or not to paint
I only paint if it is a total rust bucket to begin with.
A while ago I went to a sale looking for a particular model Amanco. There were four on offer, three were repainted and one in original clothes. I got the one in original clothes even though it probably needed more work, but I enjoyed cleaning it up with degreaser and oily rags to find nice areas of red patina underneath and even a bit of striping. It is all part of the history, so easily destroyed by modern formula paintwork.-- well that's my two pennyworth.

Re: To paint or not to paint
I think Stuart hit the nail on the head. Personally, I detest the 'fairground' look and much prefer to see working clothes or factory finish.
