Ed's Lister D Little tlc
Hi all,
Running Ed's D type at Westlands on Saturday, I was looking at her and thinking, that flywheel's not running true, I shut her down as Ed was busy running the food stall, and had a look, sure enough there was around 50 Thou of play on the crank main bearing, "oh pooh, no more running for you today"
So today as Ed has no workshop as yet and won't time to do anything with me on it for a while, and it would be a shame if he couldn't run her next week, I picked her up in the van and brought her here for a transplant.
The crazy thing is it only took me 1hr 15m to do the following including unloading, mind you, 30min of that was getting the gib key out lol.
The offending little beggar
Going to take the bearing to my local supplier tomorrow in the hope they may have one on the shelf at a sensible price
Then with any luck she can go back together again ready for next weekend

Re: Ed's Lister D Little tlc
Have the bearing in my hand now, have got an up rated sealed bearing for two reasons, one its what they had in stock, two, looking at the build design of the D being splash lube, there is only a hole below and to the side of the bearing and the other bearing was dripping in oil where as the outer (this one) had very little oil present, with the sealed bearing this will never be an issue, you could argue its gone 60yrs like this but hey ho lol.stationary stu wrote:steve w wrote:Nice one BVM - i could do with someone like you local to me - lol

Re: Ed's Lister D Little tlc
new bearing seated
Crank shaft back in and bearing carrier re-fitted to the block
Won't bother with pics of the flywheel back on etc as they are already covered above, all in all it could have been a lot worse, play has been completely overcome as would be expected with a new bearing having just been fitted . Just need to get the wheels/handles back on the trolley and load it back on the van on Sat morning

Nice work. Isn't it good when everything goes relatively to plan with no nasty surprises?

Ahhh so that's the real reason for not showing a pic with the flywheel on pulley back on the engine :stick lol: :stick lol: :stick lol:
Hope it runs at the correct speed with the wolseley Andy.

Won't take much, she's in pretty good nick over all so with any luck it won't take long to whip the head off, clean the faces and do a de-coke, plus the Mag needs shimming up, the chain rather slack .

Re: Ed's Lister D Little tlc
Andy it might be time for a new chain, I tried to take the slack out of one of mine it had every shim I could find under the mag and I was even thinking about making some shims out of some sheet aluminium I have. Then I though it was just stupid to continue so just bought another chain, I must get that fitted and sort that D out. Although there's enough D threads running ATM.

Re: Ed's Lister D Little tlc
I had the same trouble with the Lister I bought for my nephews. I bought a chain from Stationary Engine Parts & it's too wide for the sprockets. (will they ever get anything right?).
I expect I will just put it on anyway as the pitch is correct. Hopefully it'll still run fine. Just thought I would warn any prospective buyers. I've no idea how much it affects anything as, like Stu, I haven't got round to fitting it yet.

its got 1/2" or more slack, and already fitted with a 1.5mm shim, think it should be ok to loose one lolnutgone wrote:It'll probably be too short then.

Re: Ed's Lister D Little tlc
You can get standard chain, links, cranked links (half links) etc on eBay. When my dad put a bigger final drive sprocket on his Velocette the chain was "only just" so he ordered a cranked link & it was fine. I was surprised to see the seller did all sizes, including the American standard as well, & prices were very good. I wish I'd known before I went to SEP for my Lister chain (still not sure if it'll do any damage running a wider chain on narrow sprockets? I certainly don't like the idea).

Re: Ed's Lister D Little tlc
Half links are a godsend ! if the chain will not quite fit it saves your skin instead of a new chain .
Nuts , i ordered a chain for my A type from them a while ago and found the same problem , Its still sat in the shed somewhere . I only shop there if i really need to .

Re: Ed's Lister D Little tlc
Guys unless you complain there going to get away with send out the wrong chain and it's about a tenner a chain not a bad earner for them. I managed to pick up a new chain in box for a fiver very happy about it.
I have one of those small chain link removal tools. I bought it to fix the kids bikes does anyone know if it can be used on bigger heavier chains?
Stu.

Re: Ed's Lister D Little tlc
you mean the ones that have 2 handles and there is a knob you wind down that pushes a pin out ?
Or use a angle grinder and take the head of a link .
