Looking good Jay, what are your plans? full strip down or just a mechanical check over.

my plans are to de coke the top half, and just remove/clean and paint the bottom half. as i have said beforei dont have any machanical experinece really so i dont want to get to out of my depth and end up with a pile of bits!! -then once ive got a bit more knowledge ill strip it completely and rebuild it. it was running reasonably well before, so de coke and carb overhaul, play around with govener and a decent paint job it should run and look well.

the other lister d runs perfect so cosmetics on that, then the two petter's in the back ground. not sure what to do with them yet.

That could be the best way get a little knowledge first. Although there is a member Hob (neville) that started in this hobby with a complete overhaul, have a read of his thread it's very interesting and he ended up with a first class engine when he'd finished.

You're in the right place to learn mate, there's plenty of experienced people here to help you out and talk you through all the technical terms. Sounds to me like this could be a good learning experience for you.
Good luck, keep us informed and don't be afraid to ask questions, no matter how stupid you think they might sound Smile Wink

We don't have many members in your area sorry to say. Thing is you don't need help you can do it all yourself just look and think about it first and if unsure just ask I'm sure someone could talk you through it, whether it be on you engine or your trailer as we have some experiance there also. I have to say your biggest enemy is rust so get used to swearing alot. Laughing Laughing Laughing

Just enjoy yourself and ask anything you need to know, it's the only way to learn.

well i managed a few more hours on it this weekend, combustion chamber de coked, valves, springs etc all out and given a good clean. spent a few hours removing the old head gasket and horrible red stuff from various areas too. i removed the magneto, and governer bits and gave all that a good clean up, ive decided to leave the cam and a few bits together as they look complicated but but every thing seams ok so i just cleaned them up. the water hopper and rocker area ive given a bit of a scrub aswell.

so far every thing looks to be in good order, well nothing bent or broken or overly worn.the head and fuel tank have been rubbed down and the first coat of red oxide was put on last night.

i did notice that base when the magneto sits has been painted, im sure i read somwhere this should be left unpainted?

so my next move get the other bits rubbed down and painted while i build upthe courage to remove the crank and con rod and piston

Your doing a first rate job Jay, good to hear there's nothing needs replacing apart from the gaskets. The red stuff sounds like red hermetite so there may have been something leaking or the last owner put it on when it wasn't needed and could have caused more problems.
Your correct in saying that mag brackets should be left un painted as the mag needs to earth itself.

I did a few more hours last weekend, removed the pully, fly wheel amd took a deep breath and removed the crank. So at least i was able to clean the sump out, inch deep in horrible black sludge so that was removed and cleaned with a brush and parrafin.

apart from the crank case most of the other parts have had two coats of red oxide

Your doing a cracking job, but me thinks you are getting help from someone in very high places (god lol) as you've managed to remove gib keys, flywheels without any problems. So it shows that praying does work LOL.
Great stuff keep us updated and when your expecting her to be running again. 👍

Stu. Very Happy

That thought did cross my mind, but as this 'D' is the engine i gave my wife to do with it how she wished she wanted to repaint it, so she is doing the cosmetics while i do the machanical and prep work.

we spent a few more hours on it this weekend, crank and crank case rubbed down, pully red oxided, carb freed and stripped and red oxided aswell. i cleaned the worst of the crank case face (head gasket face) up so just wet and dry needed when the time comes.
