That's running great now Steve, well done and well done to all that helped him.
You must be very pleased with it now as I know how down hearted you must have felt when you first got it and it wouldn't run right.
Looks and sounds great. Very Happy Very Happy

Steve all sounds good but you need to decide now before the rally season starts if your going to paint Phylis and/or make her a new trolley. Times flying past and the rallies will be here quick enough.

Very Happy very true Stu, -

right i have to decide on a trolly design and which wood to use, what do you think? i want to keep it simple (like me) thought i better get that one in before anyone else did - lol - i like the idea of old timber but i was thinking of using 4" x 3" for the runners and simple cross members - i will have some plates lazer cut in stailess to make a steering point. if i have a few cut i might put them on here for the cost of the material, i like the idea of spreading the load on the steering rather than using just washers,

Steve, For making steering turntables I have used pipe flanges in the past.

Stu, You seem to know an awful lot about engines names!!!!!

maybe Question its on 4 x 4 at the moment but i think the petrol tank is supported on the frame under the engine so dont think i could go to 2" - maybe 4 x 3 planed with the arris taken off,

i agrre 4 x 3 does sound heavy - will be interesting to see what others think?

Steve I've had another look at the first pics you posted and it may look ok on heavy timbers What colour stain (if any) would you use, as in leaving the wood natural or a dark stain.

hi stu, i am thinking just a mid - dark stain, just got to find a couple of old timbers now. i dont mind if they are stained or show some age as i think it adds to the engine. i was also wondering about using some iron braces instead of timber.

took my starting handle and had a ltr of paint mixed yesterday to match it, i am thinking of just making a new trolly and painting parts of the engine as to be honest it doesnt need a full paint and strip down, i think a new trolly will make a big difference.

i agree with you mate
theres plenty of paaint on your engine ,and its only at the stage of having carrector ,if mine looked like yours when i started ,she would still look that way now mate
the paint is the used but not the abused look and i like that
trolley will be a nice touch for her to sit on and save the casting better too for you
as somone said the other day dont use oak as it couses rusting to what ever sits on it

I've been thinking about the Oak/Steel problem and I think some rubber cut and fitted inbetween should help stop the rusting.

Steve I know it's just messing and you might not have the time to do it but what are you doing with the trolley it's sat on now? If it's not use how about painting the wood either the same colour or a contrasting colour just to see if it looks any good. No need to prep just undercoat then top coat should do it. Laughing Laughing Laughing

Well at least think about it lol! lol! lol!

I only just went through all your forum on this engine.
Is a great example of a hit and miss. I like the video where you put it under load - brings out the best in an engine. Dad and I put engines under load when they're not running smoothly to see if that's part of the problem. These engines were made to work and seem to like it.
Thanks for all the detail in the post.

Graeme, very true engines like to be worked, some engine don't like it when there not worked, most 2 strokes do and not forgetting engines like the Petter M that needs a load all the time Laughing Laughing Laughing

Steve, good luck and hope you might find something different that you like.

hi Graeme, thanks for the reply - good to see overseas members on the forum,

I have just been to pick up some bolts for work and spotted a 4.2m length of planed 4" x 2" for £12 so got it for the trolly - it is pine but very Tight Grained it has a few more Knots than i usually like but thought it adds to it, i will coat it in a wipe on and wipe off layer of varnish. it will give me somthing to work on while the wife is working at the weekend as i have the kids. Smile

i wanted to keep a bit of old look so i cut up a steel sheet that we had used as a man hole cover in the past.

The petrol tank conector had come off so i will need to get it soldered on?

I decided while the engine was apart to paint the base frame as the paint was peeling off.

Great job you've made with the trolley and the old iron does give it that something different. Nice set of wheels it's sitting on just the right size.
Yes you might as well get all the paint work tidied up before you fit it to the trolley, just in case you make a mess Laughing Laughing Laughing
