Re: dynamo power output
Volts multiplied by amps equals watts.
If it is a 18 amp dynamo producing 110 Volts (sounds doubtful, that would be a bloody big one) it would produce 1980 Watts, or 1.98 Kilowatts.
As you say it's quite a small one, I doubt it's 18 amps, unless it's a 12 Volt one???

It defiantly has 110V on the brass plate on the side or it might be 1.8 amps would that sound more like it ????

Re: dynamo power output
It could be 1.8 amps, that would give you almost 200 watts, my Tarpen is 400 watts, at 110 volts, which makes it 3.6 amps. Doesn't sound a lot, but is good enough for a couple of Tarpen hedge cutters.
If this is the case, & it's 1.8 amps, then you'll be good for 3 60w light bulbs. Pretty much all the 110v bulbs available are site bulbs, these are what they call rough service, meaning they are built tougher than normal bulbs, they are almost all 60w as well.
Personally I would just run 2, to avoid giving the dynamo too much work (it's old, it should be enjoying it's retirement ) but it should cope with 3.
The alternative would be to try & source some smaller wattage bulbs from somewhere, but they need to be filament bulbs, old style. (or halogen bulbs). Modern "compact flourescent" low energy ones won't work on a dynamo.
My Tarpen dynamo is quite large (you can see it on my thread) & only gives out 400 watts, as I said. But the next model of Tarpen generating set had a dynamo which was much smaller, perhaps half the physical size of the one on mine, but this still gave out 400 watts. So, what I'm trying to say is; the size of dynamos can be a bit confusing, as technology moved on very quickly during the war (as it always does in wars) & these things got ever smaller & more powerful. So a huge dynamo from, say, 1920 will probably only give out the same power as a much smaller one from, say, 1950. Difficult to tell from the actual size of the thing.

2x 60 watt bulbs will be plenty to light up your engine and display bourd ,
for a night light up

Re: dynamo power output
i know i did kind of realise that once i have posted
well it will go on whatever takes my fancy .... i have a smallish non steerable trolley that i thinking to mount the genny one one end then the lighting board on the other ..... think would look quite good .
Im not one for having a genny or a pump on a small frame pegged on the ground in a way the public have to bend down to have a close look whats going on in my mind .
but i have a nice fowler in bits it could be paired up with .

Re: dynamo power output
I could do with a volt meter. Amp meters are a bit of a lottery, you really need ones with an internal shunt (this should be marked on them) otherwise it can be a bit of a pain setting them up.
Also, check the volt meter is DC if it's DC you want. I bought an AC one when I was a kid, & wasn't happy when my dad told me it wouldn't work on the Tarpen
But seriously, I would love a volt meter or two, if there is any left. Do I need to PM???
