My latest engine.
Well we had a bit of a ride out yesterday to collect my latest engine, yes I know I keep saying no more but the price this went for it's was the bargin of the century.
I'm a bit done in today after such a long trip but as soon as I get it out the van I'll do a video as it has such a strange sound to it when it runs. Not sure of the date the last owner guessed at late 40's and I don't know if there's any records so I can check this, the last owners dad bought it back in the early 80's from an auction where an enthusiast was selling up. It's not been rallied for a few years so it should make a bit of interest as I don't know how many of these are still doing rallies.

Re: My latest engine.
Chris I thought the seller would back out of the sale but he didn't, although I'm sure I saw him crying at one point I've seen Lister D's selling for more then I paid, so it's was to much of a bargin to miss.
And there's not many Bradford engines about so it is reasonably rare, I don't think it's been used as a drag saw (a lot were) as I've checked (might be wrong) there's not the conection on the flywheel to attach it. If anyone knows different can they let me know.

Cheers mate, the pics I've seen look to have some kind of way to connect the drag saw to the flywheel where mine doesn't.
You could also ask him if he knows how to date his engine if it's the same as mine a Bradford 1.5hp enclosed crank then I can maybe work it out from the engine numbers.

Re: My latest engine.
Just going to leave it Richard it starts and runs fine maybe just give the paint work a buff up with some polish and it's good to rally. The pics don't do it justice as it looks better in the flesh. It has been preserved for at least 30 years so it hasn't done a lot of work since it was restored and it never attended that many rallies due to it's location in the Lake district.
The only thing I know of that needs looking at is the one way valve where you switch from petrol to parraffin, that sometimes sticks. I don't know how well it runs on parraffin as the last owner always ran it on petrol so I'll have to check that out.
What I do know about it ... it's a heavy lump to move about LOL.

Re: My latest engine.
I see that it has stretcher handles at either end of the trolley Stu. That'll be you and the missus carrying it across the field at rallies then eh?

Yes sure Dan and we will run with it when it rains so the engine doesn't get wet More like the stretcher is for me.

Re: My latest engine.
Just a wee bit i know about them,
From 1946, 2 seperate push rods were used for exhaust and inlet valves, and had the solex carburator.
The Wico EK mag was used from around 1925.
I know its not much, but its a start,
Looks a nice little engine though,
Paul

Just looks like the bog standard Bradford, Bradford Amancos usually had spoked flywheels and Amanco cast into em somewhere, and the Avons had drip oilers, nice engines, but they kick back like buggery!

Thanks Matt, it's a petrol/paraffin Bradford 1 1/2hp enclosed crank built sometimes in the 40's. It was a bargin so I had to have it at £185 you can't complain only needs a small problem sorted and that's the tap to switch over to paraffin.
As for how many engines I now have the answer is I don't know about 30ish I think I need to check them out to see what I have got, it's about 15 large and 15 small engines, shame there not all runners but there's plenty of work to keep me busy.

Re: My latest engine.
She's a very heavy engine Matt, the wheels could be removed from the trolley for shipping but shes no light weight.
