Glass reproduction, wine glass type.
I'v taken my oilrer glass from my Ruston AP to see if it can be reproduced, (wine glass type) more info tomorrow on the doings. For now though, does anyone know of a source for these that i'v not found, i have looked. I'v done searches on here and other sites, but found nothing, short of buying a complete oiler from feepay.
Anyway, i had a chat with a glass blower yesterday and it was quite posotive. Today i took in the glass and had a propper chat. It seems blowing glass isn't as romantic as it's often shown on TV. Were looking at some thing formed from pre-made tube. The closest size tube on the rack was just under size, by about 1mm. I don't think this will be a problem, also it's a thinner wall. All i'v specified is the base has to have the same shape, not too woried about thickness, as long as it looks the part. The tube is turned on a type of lathe with several blow torch nozels pointed at it, in the right manner. The glass is manipulated into shape by hand, by the way of several formers and paddles, i'm told the hard part will be making the base as thick and deep as the original. As for cost, she couldn't / wouldn't even give a guide. But, i did tell her if it was too expensive to make the two i need she could possibly make more, so i could try to get some money back by selling them on. The more you make the cheaper the individual could be, perhaps ?
So, i'm asking, if they can be made, and at a reasonable cost, is there a market for them. Does anyone want one now or for a future restoration, or just to have a spare on the shelf ? What's the opinion on selling them on feepay, will they sell ?
They will not be an exact visual match, but will be as close as can be acheived with modern production. She thought the original was formed in a mold also, not blown and cut to lenght. I'm hoping to get two so they are a match on the engine, no point having one new one on the engine and one old one that's been super glued back together.
Were these a common glass used by several companies, or bespoke to Ruston ? Anyone know ? Did RH buy the complete oiler in from a suplier ? If they were used by others these glass's will fit other makes of engine.
Rough size is 65mm total hight, 50mm outside the top, and 27mm outside the base.
I'll know more tomorrow i hope. There is no time scale on this, i told her i was in no rush, don't need to rush her for it to cost more. But, i did say if the two were too expensive more was an optoin, provided cost's were still reasonable.

If it was my engine I'd write to Ray Hooley and see if he had a supply for them or if he wanted to buy any to sell on.

I'm sure I read somewhere of someone cutting the bottom off a suitable glass bottle.

That would work for a parallel glass oiler but have you ever seen a glass bottle that could be made into a wine glass oiler glass.

I got the glass back today, bad news, the prototype cost £27. There won't be any more at that price. I paid up and took it, she says she might be able to make a few "much cheaper" in a few months when she's not the new girl any more, she only worked there 6 weeks. Shame, as it's a very good match -

I do not suppose that is a bad price for what you got when you take into consideration the cost of someones time. Still a wee bit painful wallet wise but that will soon be forgotten!!

Re: Glass reproduction, wine glass type.
Hi, i think that was very reasonable when you consider the price of an oiler, to actually have someting made taking into account time and materials expenses £27.00 is nothing, i would have been well chuffed especially seeing how good a match it is,

I know it sounds a lot but how much would you pay per hour for any craftsman, as long as your happy with the end result that's all that matters.
Have it as a birthday pressie to yourself.

I'm happy with it, very happy with it, it's so good a copy. I'm only saying for that price i won't be having any more made. Unless, anyone else want's one making up for the same price, i can sort it for you, at no extra cost obviously.

Had a go my self :)
I seen the wife having one of these little bottles and it got me thinking, (there are two small sizes, this is the larger Blossom one not the Gallo one) If i could learn to cut them i could make a drip feed glass. These are on the shelf in Tesco's (however, other mass-market rob-shops are available)
Top cut off, i broke it but not bad for a first try, the wife thinks it's good cos she get's to have another bottle while i practice.
The base part of the oiler is a perfect fit, i know it's broken but it dosen't get much better than this.
I used a stone grinding disc in the 4" grinder to finish the edge.
I'v been watching bottle cutting vid's on youtube, with a bit more practice i'll get it. I hope the wife appreciates my dedication to getting this right !
Now i know what your all thinking , he's throwing some time at this ?!?! Well, yes. But i painted the garden fence, (all 16 panels, both side's) and cut the lawn today, before i had a go. So the wife really can't complain !

Yes Ian when she hands you an empty wine bottle and says "stick it" she means in the shed to make oilers out of them.

Ray - you're going to have to emigrate mate - you're just too far away for our glass blowing needs in the UK! - Not sure you'd approve
But a big welcome to the Forum as well - good to have your skills onboard!

Cant argue with that thinking! - thanks for being so accommodating! - the dark art of glass blowing is interesting - if you've done any engine projects (or simply mechanical) I for one would be delighted if you posted a few pics (have to be on here as a member for a week or so) so we can understand the process you go through - I guess its not all exotic venetian glass blowing workshops and time off to drink wonderful red wine! - or in your case exotic locations (Adelaide) and drinking wonderful Aussie red wine...

That's cheap!! I got quoted a price of £80 for one a similar size at Astle a few years back, I left it and used araldite to glue it back together....
