Hi, does anyone know of a firm, or local engineer, who can cut a keyway into the hub of a belt pulley.
From the advice I'd been given - I undertstand that this job needs to be done 'right'.
I live in the NE of England.

Thanks
Elliot

Hi MIke

I've got the chance of a 8" diameter pulley that fits the Lister, but with no keyway. As I intend to drive a saw bench with this belt pulley, I need to get a keyway properly cut into the hub.
I'll keep looking for a pulley that's precut with a keyway - but in the meantime thought I'd see if there were any locals or firms that could help out.
I'm seeing an local engineer tomorrow - fingers crossed he has a key slot cutter, or knows someone who does.

Hi Bill

I'm going up to Eyemouth towards the end of next week, so that would work in perfectly.

Thanks a lot for that.

You can always cut it with a keyway chisel and a club hammer.
Saw it done in one of those war information films when I was an apprentice.

i guess that was all they had back in those days, sounds like you need a very large hammer to do that job along with a very sharp chisel...

I'll bet if you closely at some old shafts you will see signs of them having been cut by hand.
It didn't take long. They were good at it.
If you come across an old cold chisel with a squashed diamond at the end, that's what it's for.

Your so right - and I must admit I didn't realise that the original 6" x 6" pulley did bolt onto the flywheel - I thought they all went on the shaft and were held in place by a keysteel and grub screw/bolt. So I can now see why, if you fit 'another type' and the pulley/slot is not 100% correct, and has a load, how damage could be done to the main crankshaft.
So yes, eyes peeled for a 3 x bolt connection pulley.

Cheers

When you never replyed and I knew you had gone away for a while I did bid on it Elliot for you but I was out bid straight away and didn't want to go wild as I didn't know if you'd found one or not. There was also some others I bid on but outbid on them also, keep looking one will turn up, and the rallies will be starting soon so that gives you more places for people to look. I've just found out that there's a sale on at Durham every month so I'm going to try and have a look over see if theres much there or not, might find one there fingers crossed.

Hi Stu

And thanks for keeping an eye open for me, yes I was away for 5 days. I found lots of agricultural goodies - but all slightly large! Full sized rotavators, hay spinners, old single and double blade ploughs - still it was fun routing around in the barn corners for smaller stuff. Got some cast wheels 'Elders' of Berwick - but 1/6th of them has been burried in the damp soil for a year or two - so not in great condition.

I think I'd prefer to find one of those baked beans shaped - flywheel 3 bolt fixing belt pulleys, rather than the shaft type. Ian's good advice is still rigning in my ears.
Put a load on the pulley and you'll possibly get shaft damage, unless it all keyed 100% right. The cutting of the keyway is not cheap (£30+) ontop of the price of a pulley - it quickly starts to become silly. So the flywheel attachment pulley makes a lot of sense.

Thanks for also keeping an eye open for me.

Cheers
Elliot

Elliot, if the measurements of the bolts come back ok it looks like youve cracked it,
ask him to send it by Hermes, myself and mike use them a lot for smaller stuff they will only carry upto a certain weight, ive sent lots of pulleys wheels etc through them very reliable and cheap i reckon about a fiver to send that, you can go on Hermes website type in your postcode weight and collection address and will give you price there and then well worth a look if it saves money and they will collect from his door no need to go to post office,
Ian

Hi Ian

Thanks for the Hermes recommendation. I've only used them only once - with no complaints. Your read about people having horror stories with Hermes, but as I've had a few of them with the Post Office !! - I remain open minded until convinced otherwise.
