i do like the a1, they are not to everyone's liking but it would be boring if everyone had the same engine. i cleaned the plate to find the number its a 1.5hp model (i thought i was buying a 3hp) the serial number is 1504565 from the list of serial numbers all the a1 series had 6 digit serial numbers this one has 7.

i have been thinking on investing in one of these to run a saw bench .

I must keep my eye out for one . only a smallish one for cutting firewood up scraps etc

Sorry to hear it's not the engine you were expecting Richard but I'm sure that one will be tidyed up and sold on then you can start looking again for the one you want.

I have a second series A1 they ran out of numbers and started again at 1500000 in 1951 running through to 1967 the final year of production . 1504565 is c 1953

I've just got my A1 tvo running. Cut up a good lot of sticks with it.

I may have got this wrong, but it seemed to me that the A1 produces 1.5hp @750 RPM. 2hp @1000 RPM and 3hp @1500RPM.
I would be interested to get to the bottom of this if anyone knows.

I think you are somewhat right as the HP is determined by the revs and the guvnor fitted.
