having more trouble with the trailer than i thought had to cut the axle out with an angle grinder
then cut the springs off
springs have been blasted and primed and i'm buying new bolts and U bolts from eBay
started cleaning up the axle and working on the brake drums, might tip the trailer on its side and do underneath while i'm at it,
a lot of work i know but where else could i get an 8 foot by 4 foot trailer with a drop down back and brakes for £150
hopefully get back to the engine in a week or so.

Re: my first engine
Nice to see you back working on your engine, all looking good, I take it that your going for a steerable axle, that's where I always make my mistakes and never have enough width on the axles to make them turn very far so hope your better then me at it I've now decided on the smaller engines just to have fixed axles for easiness

Re: my first engine
finished the trolley today
and set the engine on it.............
Stu the end where the engine is is steerable, no problem with the lock because the wheels are small enough to go under the trolley. looking back i would have liked bigger wheels.

Re: my first engine
thanks Matt, it helps sharing a workshop with a retired wheelwright
timber is all 40 year old pine reclaimed from a big packing crate, wheels, axle metal and bolts came to about 35 quid and the varnish was left over from decorating the bathroom

Re: my first engine
Cracking looking trolley, give yourself a pat on the back for a first atempt you can't get much better. Neville you could always change the wheels if you find some bigger ones, the axles would need to be changed as the diameter would be bigger so you always have that option then they'd need to be longer.
Befrore you mount the engine check first that the starting handle won't foul anything, (if you change the wheel size have it sorted now) nothing worse then getting it all built and find you can't turn it over, I saw it a few months back at a rally where he had to take a trolley wheel of to start his engine

Re: my first engine
Thanks guys
most of the last few days under the trailer wire brush, prime and paint
springs are ready, brake back-plates being repaired
managed to source all the new fixings
and painting the frame
large quantity of liquid pain killer purchased from the local wine-shop after laying on my back trying to look up for long periods hoping to have the trailer back on its wheels next week.

Re: my first engine
There big wheels to be on that trailer, must have been built as a heavy weight trailer. They look very similar to the wheels on my twin axle plant trailer 600x16 but mine needs new tyres which are difficult to find in my price range so looking to change the wheels for something newer.
All looking good and hope you get it finished before your hols.

Re: my first engine
Yes I think that's what they are, but must be a series 1 landy as the later ones went up to 7.50x16. There is someone near me that breaks 4x4's so I'm thinking of paying him a visit to see what he has in. Like I say it's all down to cost as I don't want to spend a lot on it as I'm going to sell it on as it's to big for me.

Re: my first engine
Matt I have 3 trailers so need to sort them and sell what I don't use. One is a single axle and 2 are twin axle but the one I'm on about is a large 3ton plant trailer, it's just to big and heavy for me to move about by myself.

Re: my first engine
still a few bits to do on the trailer, but its back on the road now, just need to fit a false front and mount the winch. may add a top to it some time to camp in it
anyway back on topic at last...................................
Petter A1 update done a bit more work recently
piston with new rings fitted on the conrod and replaced the lower fan cover
refitted the barrel
tested the mag and fitted it so it clicks and sparks at TDC
put the head on
and the manifold
and did some retouching on the flywheel ready to fit the key
got a pair of 1940's petrol cans at a rally the other week and did them up a bit too
starting to look like an engine now
