i have got a generator i do not know what make or model it is but i have been told should be 110v. I am having trouble wiring it up as seem to be quite a few wires coming from it , took the end plate off and found there is 4 magnets with 3 wires going to them and then a further 2 wires going to the windings on the body .

Question is which wires do i use as positive and negative ? the wires that go to the windings do i use one as a poss then the other as a neg or what ...? Any help gratefully appreciated

I might be able to help.........

The issue is a little confusing when the op states that it has magnets and windings....so is it an ac gen or dc? especially when he states which is pos or neg, this would indicate its a dc machine...

if its an ac unit then I'd have thought it would have a regulator

Dynamos fall into two categories... Shunt or compound wound....

Shunt wound is where the field coils are in parallel with the armature, compound is where the field coils are split and are in series/parallel with the arm....

Does the rotor have any slip rings or does it have a commutator like a motor?

Again some fotos would help...

its a shunt type , i have spent many hours of reserching and talking to people and it seems the field is fooked .... only 14.7 ohms for the resistance when should be alot higher than that for sure

Sounds like there's a short somewhere...
Do you have a multimeter/know how to use one?

Can you segregate the field windings from one another? This would help in determining which coil is goosed.......

You would have nothing to lose by attempting to rewind it....
