Lister D, what grease to use
Hi Everyone.
I am completely new to this and have recently got myself a 1949 Lister D. I was wondering if there is any special type of grease to use when greasing the rocker assembly.
Thanks for any help.

General automotive grease will be all you need, 20/50 engine oil will do unless you want to buy the correct SAE30.

Hello MrDaveC
The lister manual recommends "Brown grease"
We're spoilt for choice nowadays when it comes to grease.
In the late 1930's they had begun to develop some fancy grease types including lithium, calcium, and barium, lithium grease proved to be a great success considering its so widely used today.
Back to Brown grease .... when I read that, I assumed they were talking about clay based grease such as High temperature bearing grease (HTB) which is what I have packed my rocker shaft with.
I figured it was good enough, wouldn't melt and it's reasonably clean to handle (no stinky EP additive)
A high temp lithium EP grease would be better than the clay HTB grease I used but given the low valve spring pressure I doubt the rockers would be fussy.
A spurt of engine oil over the top of the valve stems before start up would be beneficial too.
