Hello folks
I have just bought a running1938 lister d 2hp 1000 rpm engine, imported a hopper cooled and converted to thermo cycle most likely by the supplier Horwood Bagshaw in Adelaide to better suit our hot climate.
The engine sits on some heavy angle iron and the thermo cycle tank was built extremely well by a skilled farmer in Arthurton where the engine powered a 2 stand sheering plant, grinder, drill press, air compressor and a bag stacker, all that equipment is currently still sitting in a shed belonging to the fella who sold me the Lister.

Anyhow, I now have the engine completely stripped down for a kerosene overhaul and will be replacing only whatever is necessary which fortunately is a very small list of parts.

I have joined to ask a question or two and learn whatever I can along the way.

Cheers

Here's the engine as I bought it.Hello from South Australia Screen13

Hi On-one-wheel,
Welcome to the forum.
Fortunately Lister D parts are easy to get and you have come to the right place for tech advice or just a chinwag. Anything you need to know, just ask.

All that extra gear would make a great exhibit.
Mike.

Hi and a warm welcome to the forum - plenty of Lister lads on here.
Please start a new thread in New Projects/Restorations when you get going.
Let me know if you need a copy of the manual.

Hello and welcome! welcome sign

I've never heard the term 'kerosene overhaul' before, I'm guessing it means just a clean up?

Thank you all for the warm welcomes.
Mike, all that gear would be awesome and if / when the price is right I may pick it up, unfortunately a heavy sentimental tax could be applied.
Woodsman,  I will start a new thread tonight, a copy of the manual would be wonderful if we could work something out in the new thread, the fellow who sold me the Lister said he might find the original manual as it still exists but I'm not holding my breath.
Mattblack, kerosene overhaul is when you simply give something a good clean inside and out, inspect and bolt it back together.
Another good one is a "Dulux overhaul" that's when you do little more than applying new paint.
Maryalice, the information tags are intact, it will be interesting to see if I've deciphered them correctly, I'll be sure to include the tags in my rebuild threads

Thanks again to you all.

Hello from South Australia Empty Like - minded company !

Hello from central england , we used an old Lister D for shearing for years , never earth - shatteringly fast but once you got the flywheel spinning over nothing stopped it all day , my late dad & uncle fixed up a one - man Lister Mounthill shearing drive bracket bolted down to the head bolts , ran it with a flat belt off the front pulley , Health & safety would have a blue fit these days , no belt guard ! I re-used the shearing gear in a lighter portable electric "gate-hanger " machine I made up ,, but still have the engine . When I was younger ( & madder ! ) I used this to shear 300 ewes here per year for several years , brings new meaning to dust , sweat ,& backache . Younger guys do most of them now , my god they can go , one done off the trailer every 40 seconds , biggest job is keeping enough sheep in front of them . The boss can look up talking to you while still shearing & never cut one . Great picture mate , be interesting to see the rest of it if possible . All that gear driven off one old Lister D , got to be a testament .

Hello littlengines01

I have many fond memories of working in sheering sheds in South Australia and New South Wales, typically the sheerers were teams of professional men who during the off season trained hard physically to maintain their high level of strength and fitness, they are incredibly good and fiercely competitive, many of them can fleece over 200 each per day, those at the top of their game can get 300 on a good day.

I doubt the farm where my lister came from ever tried to run all that equipment at once, typically the engine sat in a workshop attached the sheering shed where the drill, grinder, compressor etc would live.
I forgot to add that even the leather belt has survived and is rolled up with the other equipment.

All the best.

good to hear all this mate , it brings back memories , I,m too old now to shear more than about 30 a day , catching , shearing & rolling , but yes , shearers are usually very fit guys who can certainly handle themselves , make excellent wingers at Rugby Football .
