Re: Lister domestic
An interesting fact about Lister pumps, Listers didn't make their own pumps, they were badge engineered by other pump manufacturers and sold under the Lister banner.

Re: Lister domestic
Quite easy to pull to pieces so it seems.
This turned out to be a piece of wood
1/8" BSP bleed valve was £2 today at B&Q

Re: Lister domestic
First job today was removing the wet end piston plug 1.1/4" BSP. It was completely seized so I had to cut the head off and drill through the edges before chiselling one half free which then released the other half.
The thread needs recutting to remove corrosion so I will need to acquire another tap.
The gland nut was tightened right up to its back wheels and as it was already chewed up with teeth marks I had no choice but to get angry with it until it came loose.
I've ordered a used one from eBay
The brass valve plate is now stripped of all previous bodged gasket material and I've ordered the correct pair of neoprene gaskets from SEP
All four valves are in good condition and just need a descale. I found an eBay seller super cheap for valve rubbers
The conrod is quite worn at both ends and I'll investigate further tomorrow.
Further stripping and priming

Re: Lister domestic
The wet piston rebuilt with new 1.1/4" leather cups.
Soaked in Neatsfoot
The valves all good just waiting for rubbers
Stripping this one has been hard work
Just had to persist. I was surprised at how much of the original casting mould has not been cleaned off the iron before painting.
Not much more stripping left to do, all threads cleaned as I go

Re: Lister domestic
Removing the "mould" is only relevant if it effects the function of the pump otherwise your slowing down the production line.

Typical of British industry and a lack of quality control or even pride.

Re: Lister domestic
The time has come to investigate the conrod.
The little end was really quite worn but I tried the unworn part of the gudgeon pin in the little end and found the play was considerably less.
So a new pin was made
I felt the small play now present was acceptable
Moving on to the big end this wasn't as bad but noticeably ovalised.
To reduce this I first skimmed the mating surfaces to the point that it was a tight fit on the crankshaft with the screws tightened,
I then fitted the parts with fine grinding paste and by rotating them whilst gradually tightening the screws it wore down the new high spots. I continued until the screws were fully tight and only just gripping the crank.
After thorough cleaning I reassembled with fresh oil and again the play was hugely reduced.

Re: Lister domestic
FYI if the crankshaft needs to be removed this pressed steel disc must be removed first so that the piston can move far enough forwards that the conrod clears the crank. It follows that this must not be refitted until after the piston and crankshaft are back in place.
First coat of mid brunswick green while I wait for parts.

All looking very good, once more, with some effective engineering solutions along the way.
I told you that the new shed would not be big enough!
Neil.

Re: Lister domestic
On the subject of paint 🥴 the price of Paragon has gotten ridiculous at £25.80 for half a litre so the next coat will be from HR via eBay.

Re: Lister domestic
Valve rubbers arrived and fitted. I've chosen 36mm x 6mm with 8mm hole
It's taken me 5 pump refurbs to come up with this idea to clean the calcification off the wet end bore.
Role up a piece of scotchbrite and cobble it to a battery drill. Works perfect as it only attacks the raised bits that we don't want.

Re: Lister domestic
Must be a veritable gorge worn in the path to your door, with all those deliveries.
Looking very smart but you better make sure they don't start breeding, otherwise it could be rather like the sorcerer's apprentice scene, with the pumps running up and down all over the place, pumping water everywhere!
One for older viewer.
Neil.

Re: Lister domestic
The wet piston refitted.
I found three rings of 1/4" graphited packing was the most it could take. Here with first ring in place.
The later domestic and indeed the current parts available include an oil seal and a different housing to contain it.
Here as with my Climax domestic pump I have modified a grommet to fit the pressed steel plate to restrict oil leakage.
Three packing rings leaves plenty of thread for taking up wear.
The grommet just fits exactly in the gap between the piston head and the pressed plate.
The spec plate refitted
Still awaiting valve chamber gaskets and other bits.
Today I've decided that all my small pumps will sit on two pieces of 4x2 all the same length.
This will allow one trolley to accommodate any one of them at once for pumping or for ferrying all of them around.
So far this will be four pumps all sat on bearers 295mm long.
Then the trolley will be built so the wheels are at 90 degrees to the driving force.
I've just ordered 4 160mm wheels for this from Ross handling.

Re: Lister domestic
The wheels arrived from Rosscastors. Good value at not much over £6 each
The neoprene gaskets arrived.
Undercut so not to interfere with valves when compressed (info courtesy of member Appletop)
The wheels on the bus
Any of my pumps can be dropped in
5/16 BSW x 5/8 grub screw was missing originally
Not much more to come now
