Re: Lister H1 restoration
Today I discovered why one of the gland plates was bent. The diameter of the part arrowed is too big so it won't go into the packing recess. This must have left the factory this way so the pump must have leaked badly for many years as attempts to tighten it failed.
So the part now corrected and there's only enough depth for two rings of 8mm packing.
I've done the best I can with the damage

Re: Lister H1 restoration
Might be worth considering building the damage up with silver solder, I've had good results in the past?
(Looks great!)

Re: Lister H1 restoration
Thanks Alan I was wondering if it could be brazed and filed.
The one that’s been chiselled would be difficult to fill.

Brazed and turned would do it

Re: Lister H1 restoration
FWIW I think the damage is part of its history.

Yes there is that.
It's laid up now awaiting parts to finish. Meanwhile I've started a Climax restoration and its nothing like my previous supposed Climax pump in terms of size.

Andy, November 's edition of Stationary Magazine on the back page is a photo of a Lister R type driving a Lister H6 pump and I wouldn't mind betting it has the same gland problem that yours had.
One gland is pulled almost right in and the other doesn't look like it's in it's bore!

I had to file quite a bit off probably about a millimetre all round

Re: Lister H1 restoration
I've now refitted the spec plate that requires no.6 size hammer screws.
You won't find brass barrel nuts in 3/8" BSW but you can in UNC that has the same thread count. All UNC thread sizes apart from 1/2" are cross compatible as long as they're not a high stress fixing. So I'm replacing the gland packing nuts with 1" long brass barrel nuts.
