Lister D taper pins and pushrods
Hi folks.
I am rebuilding a Lister D type engine and have come across a couple of things about the motor. The engine only had one bent pushrod so I bought a pair off ebay and they are of two different lengths, can anyone say which is the intake and which is the exhaust.
I also have damaged taper pin holes in the camshaft for the starting dog/sleeve and I need to either ream out to different size pins or has anyone drilled them out to fit mills or spring type pins instead..

The push rods for the rockers are the same length, I might have the next wrong as I cant remember which way around between old and new but "later" engines had caps on the top of valve stems but they wouldn't make much difference in the push rod length.

Push rods should be the same length. I have one if you get stuck!

Re: Lister D taper pins and pushrods
Thanks folks and sorry about my late reply. I have one rod at 10.500 " and one at 10.375" long but do not know which is which. When I bought new valves and guides they came with hardened caps, but I am not sure of my engines date of manufacture. I believe it is about 1945 ish.

Re: Lister D taper pins and pushrods
When you said one was longer I didn't think it would be bugger all so I wouldn't worry about the length, what is your serial no, put it on here and tomorrow I will check.

Re: Lister D taper pins and pushrods
I know it is only a small difference, but it does alter the geometry a bit I suppose. Can you say what length they should be or what length you spare one is ?
My serial number is
1/26606
Spec 28 DH
HP 1.1/2
RPM 700
Thanks Bullgoose

Bullgoose,
I've only just read the above as I've been sorting my Daughter and Son in Laws shed after the storms and tomorrow I'm in London with them to see The Fools and Horses musical so I will answer your questions on Sunday.

Re: Lister D taper pins and pushrods
Hi Maryalice.
Have you had a chance to look at the pushrods at all My rebuild has come along quite well and I have just finished putting all the timing gear back in after buying some great 1.48" roughing reamers and making custom taper pins to repair the damage caused by having to drill out the pins from the camshaft for the starting dog sleeve.
With the bottom end done I am going to paint over all the nuts and gaskets after letting them settle down with a quick nip up after a couple of days.
I am going to have to make my own timing marks because mine were eligible on the flywheel and I just painted it all green. I will find TDC with A DTI and make paint marks on the wheel and block, I t is just a though but does anyone know how much piston travel equates with degrees of movement on the flywheel.

Re: Lister D taper pins and pushrods
TDC is when the crankshaft keyway is at the dead 6 O clock position, nice and simple like the D Type engine in general.

Will look tomorrow, as not working, put a tape measure around rim of flywheel, read off mm's and divide by 360, these engines are dead simple not F1 race engines so dont have to be accurate.
