Villiers coil questions
I received the new coil for my MK20 engine yesterday, but I have a couple of (probably stupid) questions...
As you can see in the photos it differs from the original, the LT connection is a small screw and the HT is a tab with a hole in. So can I loosen the screw and loop the end of the LT lead round it (or use a small ring terminal), or do I need to solder the lead to the screw head? And do I need to solder the HT lead to the tab, or can I bend it over and use the original type screw in HT pick up?

Re: Villiers coil questions
I solder LT lead to screw.
I also salvage the old HT button and connect with fly lead of stranded copper wire.
Then stick to body with a drop of epoxy and insulate with old fashioned brown 'licky' paper tape. Try a picture framing shop. I suppose parcel tape would be just as good.
Also check the fit the the cheek pieces - some of these Taiwanese jobs can be rather loose. A shim cut from a drinks can will do the trick.

Re: Villiers coil questions
I have just fitted the same coil to my disassembled 25. I asked the supplier about the screw, he didn't know but asked the manufacturer who said under no circumstances attemt to undo the screw but solder to the head.
Shame there's not a note in the box as it sounds like it could be buggered up!

Thanks for clarifying that, I would have undone the screw to fit a ring terminal and probably ruined a brand new coil in the process, like you say there should be a note to that effect with the coil.

Re: Villiers coil questions
Thanks for the replies, glad I asked about the screw, I did actually just start to unscrew it when I suddenly had the thought that the LT windings may be soldered to it inside. I have checked and there is still continuity between the screw and the core, so it looks like I have got away with it. I will do as suggested with the HT contact as I have ordered a new screw in HT pick up.

Re: Villiers coil questions
I got my coil from britbikesuk and did suggest to them that it might be a good idea to enclose a note.
Could spoil what otherwise looks a nice coil!
Incidentally I did start to strip my original Villiers coil out of interest, and under the outer cardboard type of tube was a fibrous self adhesive tape which was quite wet, as in oily. After removing a few layers it then smelt as though it had been electrically hot, as in burnt out.

Re: Villiers coil questions
Nice job! made it look like an original.
Did a similar mod to mine, cut a small piece of sheet brass and stuck it onto coil body on top of a cardboard insulator. When it had cured I soldered a piece of copper wire through the tag and onto the piece of brass. Shame I had assembled it before I took the photo!
