Gasket Material? Empty Gasket Material?

Post by Robotstar5 Tue Jun 16 2020, 22:58

I'm making new gaskets for my Wolesley WD2 and wondered what to use for the water jacket "door"?, I've got Flexoid "oil resistant" paper or cork sheets or do I need to look for something else as it's got to seal hot water. Cheers.

Cornflake box. When it's bolted up there is very little that the water can do, because it is nipped up tighter than my bodice (Need help to keep this hour glass figure) it won't leak as the water cant get in.

Agree with Appletop, yet again Very Happy , but I wipe a thin smear of grease on both sides to help seal the surfaces.

Shreddies boxes I find are too thin and weedy...

Whereas Weetabix bursts the bolts asunder...

The Boy's Own Paper often recommended oiled brown paper for gaskets in their constructional articles.

you have to be careful using some materials, as an experiment when I restored my Hopper called Lister A I used liquid gasket, I assembled the crank bearing assemblies without gaskets and found the gasket material actually allowed end float but without them I couldnt turn the crank.

When I'm making gaskets for things like this, I use an old felt pen or ink pad to ink the mating surface of the component. I then press this down onto the cardboard or gasket paper to get a good outline of the shape of the gasket required.
For both materials, the thin smear of grease is certainly a good idea.
