Helicoil fitting
May be of use if anyone wants to know how helicoils work.
I had a slight weep from the drain tap on my Lister D so took it out to re-seal it, i ran a tap in to clean out the threads and it did just that, the threads came out on the tap
Before trying to remove the bung and ruining the previous owners excellent paint job I thought I would try a helicoil so here goes...
The kit, left to right, drill to suit tap size, special tap, helicoil insertion tool, helicoil and drive tang removal tool
Stripped hole was nearly drill size so drill went through easy enough
Tapping the hole
Helicoil on insertion tool ready to go in
Of course the photo of the tool in use had to be blurred so this is the helicoil in place
As the hole was big enough I used long nose pliers to pull the drive tang out as the tool would have punched the tang into the waterjacket
A bit of liquid PTFE on the threads and the tap's back where it should be

Thanks for posting Stuart. Haven't had the need yet but very useful to see helicoil in action.

I admire your effort to keep the thread the correct size, I would have drilled next size up and fitted a reducer, I have used heli coils on spark plug holes and they certainly have their place in our hobby.

Yep come in handy for spark plug holes! Used them to replace the thread on a Villiers Mar-Vil cab mount.
