Halfords don't sell AB6's (or any 18mm plugs Sad ).
Halfords are quite cheep on plugs though, "IF" you have a trade card, a £4 plug comes out just over a quid on trade, just goes to show Very Happy

Help lister d spark plug ? Empty Re: Help lister d spark plug ?

Post by nutgone Fri Apr 19 2013, 20:14

Always have a few spare plugs. They're one of those things you start to collect as you go on with the hobby. Soon enough it won't matter if one goes missing, you'll always have another knocking about.

Worth picking up the older "Detachable" ones at shows (the ones you can take apart to clean). They last for ever. But always best to test that there is a connection between the terminal & the centre electrode with a multimeter. Some plugs corrode inside & lose this connection, they will still spark as the spark jumps the gap inside the plug, but they will put a lot of strain on your mag & will give you running troubles. Champion 8COM plugs are one of the worst for this, but DON'T throw them away! They can be repaired. I will be writing a thread on repairing these plugs very soon.

Specialists say you should even check brand new plugs for this (it's easy enough with a multimeter, only takes a few seconds), as some have manufacturing faults or are wrongly marked up "resistor" plugs. You should never use a resistor plug on a magneto (or a "suppressor" or "resistor" plug cap).

Blimey, I should really do a quick thread on plug care. Shocked

This is a handy site for getting most of your plugs etc just some of there prices can be a bit high so you'll need to check the price on ebay before ordering anything. It has a good section that allows you to cross referance plugs for others that will fit.

I know this is a bit slow on the response but have just found The Green Spark Plug Company selling new 8 Com plugs ...... Nowt to do with me and at 15 pounds each you can make your own minds up.. Just thought I'd let you know. You can find them on eBay as well as
Gsparkplug.com

If I read the thread above correctly they are a better fit than the NGK AB6

Best

£7.50 inc postage, not as bad as "Green spark plug" at £15 ex VAT!

These are PROPER 8COM plugs, not an NGK rip off of a 18mm plug.

Proper detachable ones too Smile . They were on my watchlist, just to see what they went for compared to G.Sparkplugs.

Does Greens actually have any in stock then? They list all sorts but most of what they list they never have in stock.

You can buy 18mm to 14mm adaptors, seeing that some of my engines are 14mm and some are 18mm, ive started buying them and putting them in the 18mm ones, so I can run them all on 14mm ones

Help lister d spark plug ? Empty Re: Help lister d spark plug ?

Post by nutgone Sun Oct 20 2013, 22:07

Some engines don't like them much as they can effect the reach of the plug & overall combustion chamber shape, but most engines will be fine on them.

I usually get mine from engines I buy. So far I've got 2 or 3 of them from various engines.

You can't beat the old detachable plugs though, especially on old 2-strokes & the more worn out, older, 4-strokes, where the plugs need cleaning regularly. Engines running all day on no load tend to foul plugs up as well.

Help lister d spark plug ? Empty Re: Help lister d spark plug ?

Post by A Lister Mon Oct 21 2013, 15:37

The Lister instruction booklets suggest that a Lodge BBL spark plug is used for the petrol Lister D (and the A and B petrol engines too).  Unfortunately, these are no longer made and new old stock (NOS) Lodge BBLs are getting hard to find; used ones still turn up on Ebay and on stalls at rallies from time to time though.  However, don't forget what Nutgone said about testing them with a meter first if you can before you buy, as there are bound to be a few dud ones out there after all this time.

I run both my Lister A and D on used BBL plugs and they seem to run very nicely on them.  I've also used a Champion 8 COM plug on my Lister D (before I found a BBL for it) and it seemed to run fine on it.  Since then, I've managed to squirrel a couple of NOS plugs away, so I should be OK in years to come.  Here's a comparison photo of a Lodge BBL and a Champion 8 COM, you can see the distinctive pink-coloured 'sintox' ceramic insulator on the Lodge plug.  I hope this is useful

Post by nutgone Mon Oct 21 2013, 22:32

Them's some damn fine plugs you got there Jules. Green with envy here. alien (sorry about the smilie, was the best I could do).

I will be keeping my eyes open for some NOS 7-COMs for my Kohler (they're actually listed as Champion Number 7, but similar thing). I've currently got 2 7-COMs & 2 8-COMs in it & the 7's fair much better, although it's a clean running engine anyway.

Mostly I just use whatever plugs are knocking about for my engines. I tend to whip them out for cleaning quite regularly anyway on the 2-strokes, as was the norm back in the day. The only 4-strokes I rallied this year was the Kohler (never needed to clean the plugs once all season) & the Briggs, which has knackered rings, so the plug was out on that one as regularly as a 2-stroke anyway.

I do need to get some more plugs though, what with me selling a few engines this year I am running short on them. I don't tend to sell an engine with a valuable plug in, I save the modern ones for those, but I've now run out of modern ones as well!

Don't pay Greens prices though Shocked , would rather use modern I reckon.

Of course if I put 4 modern plugs in the Kohler, that would replenish my stock of usable detachable ones. (a thought that has only just occurred to me Rolling Eyes ).

Did you know Lodge still exist under a different name? And their main product line brand is still sintox? And they found far more profitable uses for sintox than plug insulation? Very Happy
