Great progress and looking good already. I have to say the thing that bugs me is these big Listers never seem to make good money even once restored and running, I can't understand why this happens as there such a nice engine to see on the field up n running. A Lister L just sold on fleabay for £162 how can an engine as lovely as this only make the same money as restored Lister D's and Wolseley WD's and half the money of a Lister A.... Crazy world we live in.

Compliments on the workmanship, looks really nice.

I usually get really unpopular for this, but I must just say I prefer it when things are painted in pieces and then built up - to my mind it makes a better looking job than painting after assembly. (Now say you're doing the final coat after it's running!)

LOL yer everything is being painted prior to re-assembly then all that will be done is to touch up any chips and of course the nuts

Personally I prefer to rub vaseline on them after putting on a stainless washer Very Happy

Seriously though, I know it's not 'correct' or 'how it was done originally' but any engine I have has to work for a living so servicing is a consideration.

Maybe it would be different if I had something properly interesting...

I used to have one of these, at least I think it was a Lister L ......(was there a Lister N??? No, I'm sure it was an L)...... Anyway, it was big, & very heavy, with 2 flywheels. I was about 13-15 years old & an old friend let me have it cheap.
Mine was hopper cooled, about 2000cc in one pot with a big cast iron piston, & it was seized solid!

Personally I think you should have left the piston attached by it's con-rod. That's how I eventually got mine freed off. I soaked it in all kind of different things, never applied any heat (although perhaps I should've) but I needed the help of the big heavy flywheels to get it moving. I began by rocking it a tiny bit & gradually I got it out of there (to reveal several stuck piston rings, but that's another story).

I also remember loosening the barrel from the crank case, as the piston was very close to bottom of stroke.
I was able to place some blocks of wood between the studs & bang piston & barrel down against them, using the inertia of the flywheels to slowly free it off millimetre by millimetre (sorry; inch by inch).

Mind you, I did soak it in a mixture (mainly diesel IIRC) for about 2 weeks prior to that, but I remember it being bloody hard work.

Good luck with it anyway. I often wonder what happened to my old Lister. I never did get it going, but that's yet another story! It's lovely to see this one, I always loved the screen cooled Listers, they're like a complete exhibit all on their own.

Great build with some great pictures cheers .

Well after a lot of hard work by Graham and Gary the Lister L had its first ralley today a small steam up at the Cross Keys Pub, still need to get the piston out of the orignal head so for now a spare head has been fitted but other than that everything eles went back as it should

As a reminder this is what it started out as

Cracking job guys well done. I've just notice with this type of cooling they use a water pump to circulate the water, I've a J type same as but smaller, I do like the water cooling set up wish mine looked like that.
