Help needed with saw bench Empty Help needed with saw bench

Post by abbott177 Fri Apr 08 2011, 22:10

Hi everyone,
This is my first post and im quite new to all of this. i have recently collected a saw bench that i am trying to find some information about. I Dont have any pictures for you at the moment but on the sides of the engine is written 'The ARUM' or 'The ARUN' i cant quite work it out. also the date 1922 is stamped with patent no 19619. on the underside of the table is stamped P[ea21]R. in all the saw seems in good condition, it has a flat belt pulley drive system and is painted green.

The information i am looking for is where it would have been built, and the year ( I an unsure 1922 would be the year as it seems in good condition for something thats 89 years old ) and finally what would have powered it ( if it was supplied with an engine ) if not what a suitable , period powersource would be?

Sorry for all of the questions on my first post but Im new to this and quite keen

Many thanks in advance

David

Hi David,

Dont worry about all the Questions thats what were here for, share and gain knowledge.

Are you sure the Patent number is correct?

Reason for asking is because if it was 19619, then that would date it as 1858 ish !!!!.

Just a thought, Does the number have an arrow pointing upwards at any point in the numbers?

Regards Paul

Some ones made a good job of that, the only thing I would say is you would have to watch your nuckles when starting

That is bloody heavy!!! There is no problems with knuckles when starting as the Petter crank puts your hand outside the frame work, it is a dream to use and someone had put a lot of thought into making it up. I have found a set of wheels to put on to make it a bit more portable, the thing I am struggling with is how to fit a turning axle without making it to high. If I fit wheels that are to small it will be a bitch to move!

Hopefully I have managed to upload a few Photos of the bench.

As far as i know there is not any arrow markings on the patent number, but i cant be sure.

After looking today it is definitely called 'THE ARUN' and at a guess the blade is about 20-22" in diameter.

Cheers so far everyone who has helped

Bigger one than mine! she's a lump. You will need some horsepower for that one.

it certainly is a big one, the previous owner used to power it off his fordson major, although i like the idea of that its not really an option for me at the moment, what sort of horsepower unit would be recommended? when choosing an power unit for it is it hp or rpm/speed/gearing that is important?

I had a bench with a 26" blade some years ago when I had more space and I had a 6/1 CS lister on that, it was just about man enough but would bark if I went for a big damp lump of wood.

they are a lovely bit of engineering, but it the weight of them that kills most of us....my mates on runs off his LISTER A and you know whens hes been sawing as the engine is covered in saw dust,Ive another mate of mine Steve has a 6hp P/P Fairbanks which his dads uses for sawing the wood, and Steve takes it to rallys, when he can get it out of the shed...it runs a very large 240 volt generator at the shows and boy does it sound nice when its under load... Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy
