Hi,
I'm Adrian Jackson and new to stationary engines.
I've owned motorbikes mostly BSA and BMW and currently getting the engine on a 65 year old BSA going (650 Twin).
I am a volunteer at Calderdale Industrial Museum - Halifax as part of which I am currently working on getting two engines running.
1) An Associated (AMANCO) 3 Mule team. It seems to be in good order apart from lack of a magneto so I 'm going to try and construct a battery and coil ignition system. Any tips would be welcome.
2) A Villiers Mk 25 250cc petrol engine. This is not strictly stationary, as it has been fitted as part of a Wrigley autotruck and has (we think) a three speed gear box. Would like to know if this set up is designed to vary the engine and road speed via the throttle or if the it is still on a governor and road speed is changed via the gearbox.
Looking forward to contributing (if I have anything useful to add to the forum)
Adrian

Hi Adrian and welcome to the forum.
To try to answer some of your questions about the Amanco what type of ignition system does your Amanco have? If it has been converted to spark plug then it is what we call high tension and a battery and buzz coil set up should be possible. If it still has however the original ignitor points that open and close inside the head (low tension) the coil must be a single winding only and I know some people use the choke from a strip light but I haven't seen it done myself.

Hi Philip,
Thanks very much for your reply.
It's still the ignitor and I've just got a striplight choke to experiment with.
Any idea what sort of battery I should use (12 or 6V?)?
Adrian

Hi Adrian, You may find this site useful
https://www.old-engine.com/maglco.htm
I believe you can use a 6 volt battery with the choke. The ignition points need to be kept open when not being tripped which is opposite to using a magneto.

H1 Adrian and a warm welcome to the forum.
PM me with your email address if you would like a copy of the MK25 manual.
Please post a few pictures in New Projects/Restorations when you are able.
Seen the Calderdale Industrial Museum of a number of occasions but it's been closed. Must make an effort to call in when next we are out that way.
