Hey guys. I've decided that when I get my old Petter AC1 up and running, I'd like to try to build a small saw bench for it to run. But I'm not sure what size blade I should be aiming for or if it's big enough? It's an AC1ZS, the 805 type that runs at 1000-1250rpm which I believe produces around 2hp.

Do you think it would manage a 15" blade to cut 6" logs with? I have a larger saw with a 28"ish blade and that bogged down with 9hp behind it, but it was a big old unit! I'm not sure whether it's worth a try or whether I'd be better off thinking of something requiring a little less grunt?

My set, Petter A1 @3hp 1500 rpm is a factory built set and runs a 20" blade and will quite happily cut full cut is most woods, hard wood like oak is a bit of a load but still manages if you take it easy, I've since "upgraded" to a 1.5hp Petter PAZ and haven't noticed any loss in cutting ability.

Thanks for the replies chaps, and apologies for the slow reply. I'm having internet issues!

Woodsman - The screw log splitter could possibly be a bit of a struggle? I have a Hycrack HC1 that used to stall my 12.5hp Kubota tractor with annoying regularity. Gearing down could be an option but then it might be a bit slow? I still have the Hycrack but now run it on my Unimog - Stalling is a thing of the past with 100hp of straight six diesel behind it, although even that will bog down and blow shear pins with the worst of what I feed it!

Villiers - That's pretty interesting. And a nice looking bench. I reckon that's the way I'll go. I don't do a huge amount of splitting and what I do take on is generally the sort of stuff that I can't beat with a maul. Sawing on the other hand, I do loads of it, and most is sub 6". Old fence posts are a favourite fuel in my household.
