Villiers Mk12 restoration
Hi all,
I'm currently trying to restore a 1955 Villiers Mk12 H/S which was my late father's. I last tried it around 5 years ago - it did start but only after a heck of a lot of trying!
Anyway, there was no spark at all when I tried it. I've stripped it down and ordered a new condenser (I'm guessing it was still the original one in there!). Unfortunately the HT side of the coil is open circuit. I'm currently trying to find a replacement type, which I believe is an M1634E. There are loads of Villiers coils on ebay, but I can't see this one - can anyone help with where I can get one?
The engine seems in very good condition, both inside and out - I reckon it will look pretty good once it's painted, etc.
Cheers in advance
Daz

Re: Villiers Mk12 restoration
Hi Daz,
Welcome to the forum, I started on a few Villiers earlier this year and now have a few bigger projects to sort.
Good luck on your Villiers, nice engines to start with.
Below are 4 options for you, the last being the most expensive.
The first one, I have bought one of these for one of my Villiers and they do fit ( just ) and they do work ok, even if they are a Chinese copy, its all about what you want to pay, also if you post in wanted section someone may have a spare, you never know, or if you search the forum you will find an alternative way of sorting this for you.

Re: Villiers Mk12 restoration
Hi Richard. Many thanks for your reply!
The first one is already in my ebay watch list, but I wasn't sure if it would work or not. It's nice to know they do. The 2nd hand one also looks interesting, but I'm unsure how risky a proposition this would be.
I did wonder about some sort of alternative, ie. electronic ignition, etc. but would prefer to keep it original, especially since it is in such good condition.
I'll let you know how I get on.
Thanks again,
Daz

Re: Villiers Mk12 restoration
Cheers for the info. I think I'm going to go for one of the new replacements rather than an 'old stock' one. I'll get one ordered and see if it works.

Re: Villiers Mk12 restoration
Evening,
Well, I fitted the new condenser and ignition coil. Guess what - I now have a spark at the plug!
I'll get some petrol in to it in the next few days hopefully and let you know whether it starts :-)

Nice work Daz. Which coil did you go for in the end?

Re: Villiers Mk12 restoration
Cheers Paul. I went for the first one on your list - didn't want to risk an old-stock one. It was a tiny bit shorter, so only one of the grub screws has actually bit, but it seems to work fine.

Hi tony,
This link might help, http://e-paint.co.uk/BS381%20Colourchart.asp.
They were also painted in many colours to suit what customers required and do not think it matters, me I would go for light Brunswick green, I have had great success with Tractol enamel with brush and sponge roller, just use a good brush pref a bristle brush. Regards Richard

Hi Tony,
Try creating yourself an account on Photobucket, load the images there then click the image to get the 'Share this photo' links top right. Click the Direct link to copy the url to clipboard then go back to your post and use the Insert an image button to paste the url.
Hope this helps.
