Only my second post so please bear with me and the few questions.
Had a moment today for a dry put together and soon worked out location of parts including the oil dipper rings and knife edge rings very neat idea.

I'm restoring the engine to a good reliable standard it came to me as a box of bits, some items not so great condition but I expect that on a ninety year old engine (I've been told 1923 does that sound right?).

I have had new Babbitt bearings cast, machined and cut in the oil groove as the old ones didn't have this and probably the cause of the failure and crank damage which has now been reground.


The hopper/cylinder was badly corroded (a common thing I'm told due to fertiliser bags used as a cover).

The replacement was great on the outside but the bore was badly pitted so it was bored, sleeved and pinned discreetly belt and braces style, there about two threads in the water drain plug hole so I now need to identify the thread for an insert (help appreciated) to make sure it holds water.

There are lots of imperfections but I'm sure they are from new and I don't want to restore to better than new cosmetically but want it mechanically sound.
I'm now in need of cutting gaskets what thickness should they be made off? Especially on the bearing housing to crankcase as this effects crank end float.

I also would like to replace the pump diaphragm, it measures .015 should it be made from shim steel?

Is there a preferred supplier of fasteners nuts etc? I'm in need of some to tidy it up.

What thread is the fuel tank drain?

What spark plug should be fitted? I thought it was A6FS which is tapered seat but the plug hole doesn't look to have a tapered seat.

My biggest thing is I don't have a magneto I would like to source a near original if you can help me identify what should be fitted and a unit/supplier I would be made up.

I won't bombard you with any more questions.......for today any way Very Happy

fowler fan may be able to help you with most of your questions .

mag should be a BTH mag and the drain plug should be 1/4 bsp

Noel,

Great project.
Interesting you got a replacement hopper, was it a donor engine ?
BTH mags turn up on Ebay, try to buy a complete one and it will either work or be a good base for rebuild. BTH M1 should be around the right 'era', they made many versions, a search on the web will turn them up.
If you get the order number from David Edgington you should find your engine on the Internal Fire archive, PM me if you need help
Spark plug, try Champion D21 if you can't get an 8COM.

i have recently got my order number for mine from David Edgington and searched the IF records and there is a nack to suss how its filed .

but you can figure out easy enough .

Hi, the Petter is coming along well.

Currently I'm cleaning up the parts (aluminium oxide blast) before zinc rich primer, then brush paint top coats.

All gaskets have been cut and hopefully the correct thickness, got an AB6 plug for now, com8 are a little pricey but look better so added  to the list for near future.

I'm still on need for a magneto (BTH M1) I was told about a sale of engine parts etc but the chap couldn't remember where or when, any ideas?

I'm also looking at exhibiting at a couple of local shows, I've downloaded a form for Hollowell Show so will see if I get accepted.
What do you do for insurance?

Apologies for not posting up much but I have read the posts and enjoy the forum.
