Ruston rotary pump

Yesterday i picked up a new pump , went into shed to have a better look at 9Pm next thing a pile of bits   

needs a bit of clean inside as full of limscale ..

Plan for attack is just a general clean and get the limescale out and piece back together with new gland packing make a frame for it to sit on and a repaint at a later date .

Anyone know any good chemical i can use to remove limescale ?

What did it look like prior to you taking the tools to it lol aint seen one before

i'd just use general limescale remover for toilets to get rid of the limescale. i don't know if it will affect the paint though.
it will look good when it's finished.

good point i need to actually upload some pictures as its all been cleaned up and both parts are in red oxide now , just a few small bits to clean up and paint then

limescale i order some industrial scale remover and caustic soda and the caustic sode stripped the paint well but it went brown with rust so took wire brush on angle grinder to it .

a update got the main parts cleaned up and painted in red oxide













next job is another coat of red oxide on the pump body and clean up all the bolts and make a cork gasket and assemble it and give a coat of top coat once back together .

done another coat of paint on the pump and made a quick cork gasket tonight as you can see most of the hard work done .





also some added bling   

got the 2nd topcoat on now

I can. If that cork gasket moves the casing to far away from the impeller then the pump will not pump.

Good point there Rob! But if it does I got a pattern made from card that I can just use a paper gasket smeared with rtv!

dont be so sure kev it hasn't got any seals   

only got gland packing and no bearings just bronze bushes .

so what is gland packing for if not to make a water proofish seal then   ???
atleast you dont need £140 worth of 3/4inch square gland for your pump,
 like i did for old franky boy

kev i have the right size packing in stock anyway

been rather busy on this got it all back together now with a new gasket and new gland packing , pipework all made and painted and made a start on the trolley now , all i have to do is make the frame for the tank to sit on as you can see its just been blocked up for now . Once that its on with the paint .





not long now till its 1st outing
