RUSTON HORNSBY 6PB
Here are a couple of pics of my ruston hornsby 6pb. As you can see it needs a bit of work. it is missing its ID plate so i have no way of dating it, only that it is post 1943 as that is when i think they switched from the flat style silencer to the pepperpot type it has. Is there anywhere else i may find a serial number? it is on what i assume is its original skids. I am hoping to have it mechanically restored but left as is paint wise as it has a nice patina.

Try the flywheel as it might on there, I know is on there on Lister and other makes but not sure about Rustons. As for the engine well she's a nice one, once you get the parts that it needs im sure it will run great! (are you restoring it)

Just restoring a 6PB myself and I haven't found any numbers anywhere else I'm afraid. All that is on the flywheel is the 'SPARK' and TDC marks. Mine is 1942 so presumably (by what you are saying Spit-Bang) it should have the flate type silencer? Mine was missing altogether (it had a tractor type exhaust) and I put a request out for the 'pepperpot' type, maybe I should be asking for the earlier sort instead? Drawn a blank so far either way!! I might have to settle for an Amanco type, though I have seen them with just a length of BSP pipe and they run quiet enough. If the fuel tank has the bakelite filler cap then it will be from the WW2 area, my PT has both a bakelite spec plate and fuel filler and that dates from 1944.

I am just going by what i read somewhere about the silencers pete, so im not 100 percent sure. shame about the serial number but there you go. I cant tell about the fuel tank filler because its missing. should the tdc mark on the flywheel line up with the arrow mark cast into the engine? cheers

Yes, the TDC mark and the SPARK mark (for magneto timing) should line up with the cast arrow. Are both your marks visible on the flywheel, if not then I can measure the distance between TDC and SPARK on mine for you?

Hi
I have 2 6PB one a 1939 with Villiers mag and one 1944 with Wico Mag. The 1944 has the serial number on the end of the crankshaft, the 39 doesn't.

Thanks for that rubythursday, I will have a look on the end of the crankshaft. to pete I havent looked for the spark and tdc marks on the flywheel yet, will have a look tomorrow.thanks for your offer of measuring.

Ive had half an hour this morning with emery paper and managed to find the spark postion on the flywheel but not TDC. unfortunately had no joy either in the serial number search. stamping may have faded through time.

No number on the crank on mine, maybe a wartime economy? The spark mark is of more use than TDC anyway but I can measure the distance between the marks on mine if you wish?
