They are 5/16 whitworth 5/16 unc will fit just as well. They would have been bolts on the water and valve covers and studs and nuts for the tank straps, they were all painted steel originally.

The Lister D's you see that has the brass tank straps etc are a bling thing the originals would have been steel. If you check ebay you sometimes get sellers that will put up nearly all the nuts bolts studs washers springs basically all the small bits from a stripped D. They don't sell cheap, normally over the 10 quid mark.

5/16 nuts

5/16 washers (8mm close enough)

3/8 nuts
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/10-X-3-8-UNC-BRASS-MANIFOLD-EXHAUST-NUTS-NUT-BN3-FREE-P-P-/280875347104?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item416579aca0
3/8 washers

2 packs of each should see you through most visible stuff, but you would only need one pack of 5/16 (8mm) washers as that's a 20 pack

Re: Brass nuts, Bolts and Washers.
Might be worth keeping all the original bits in a box or tub or something (ice cream or margarine tubs are pretty good for this, or jam jars, but I don't think tank straps would go in a jam jar).
Should you come to sell the engine, or pass it on at a later date, you can leave the next person the opportunity to take it back to original if they wish. Also, should you ever change your mind, or get another project which needs those bits, they'll come in handy.
Dunno why I'm saying this, us engine enthusiasts never throw anything away!

Funny the things we have to do to carry on with our hobby, there again I'm sure there's plenty of stranger hobbies out there like football, fishing etc there wives must have a lot to put up with. An engine a can of petrol and we will sit happy for hours. or are you a fiddler that is up n down to there engine ever few minutes doing tiny adjustments (ok I can't help it, I like to mess lol ).

Don't forget, at most rallies & shows people will be a good 6 foot away, so probably won't see it.
It's sod's law though, stuff like this. I bet you were being careful as well? (isn't it always the way? )

Re: Brass nuts, Bolts and Washers.
I don't know which path Ed's taking but if he's wanting a pristine engine for judging then the straps will need to look good. Maybe try to buff out the scratch first with something a little more abrasive first, them change to brasso to finish off. Only thing is, are the brass or brass coloured/coated? If they are you may not be able to polish them to much.
