something to run.

hello everyone,
after what seems like forever I have eventually found something for my petter to run.

it is a alpha laval type 9 vacuum pump. it came with a factory made fitting bracket.

I was disappointed to hear it was a pump I thought you had found a super charger of a Petter A1.

Very nice looking engine with a very small pump, nice find to get a complete unit.

It must have some power to be able to operate 2 pairs of shears.

I didn't even know they existed!

Is there anything else you can run off a vacuum pump? I know some car manufacturers experimented with running various things from vacuum back in the 60s & 70s. I think it was Ford who tried running windscreen wipers from the manifold vacuum, via a large storage reservoir in the wing.

Truck brakes used to work on a vacuum system, same idea the air system they use now but the opposite way round LOL.

May I ask where you got it from I'm searching for one of theseto go on my lauson (alpha sold) it as a milking pump set. But mine was gone when imported it.

I actually had a vacuum pump similar to the one on the website but the crank was damaged badly where the pulley had run loose, I put it on ebay but got no takers so it took the 'Slow Boat to China' as it was in my way. They do crop up from time to time though on ebay, but usually missing the glass oil bottle. The ones like Richard has were Alfa, not Alpha, 'oilless' pumps and normally found on Petter A's and Lister D's where they were bracketed to the front of the engine.

Thanks for clearing that up. When richard spelt it alpha like on the lauson engines. got me worrying i had missed the vacuum pump on ebay.

Right off recent discussion - but just wanted to say how good your engine looks.
I have a look around when I'm dragging my feet on a project and to see a well restored engine helps get me going again.

the engine is now finished, it has a vacuum clipper running from the pump. I will take a picture of it when the snow goes.

That looks fine Richard, made for each other. I am still battling with my Villiers powered shearing set restoration, dragging on forever it seems, but completion date is iminent at last! Just restored some Burman horse clipper's, a lot easier as there was no engine involved.

I can help with that as I owned a car with one on it.

The wiper system was operated straight off the carburettor but run through a quart vacuum can first to ballance any pulses I believe.
They worked good untill you went uphill when the throttle opened and killed the vacuum!

Needless to say the application only lasted a few years and then dissapeared.

I also had a vacuum operated cooling fan on the dash which was again operated straight from the carburettor through a quart can.
The engines were both V8's and were able to carry the load, except when the foot went down to kill the vacuum.
