jap model 5 1947 out of shed and under the spanners
ive had a jap J.A.PRESTWICH LONDON model 5 in my shed for a while now, and its now clamped onto the old amanco trolley as we speck,
with a nice 2yrs old recon wico series a wolseley style mag on it,
ive just made the new h/t lead for it.
cleaned out the carb jets ect and full fuel system inside and out
so will be trying to get to run after me cuppa tea "warm up my atheritic bones
and see what happens

Re: jap model 5 1947 out of shed and under the spanners
hi stu
well it was like this
it ran for a minute with blue flames and smoke ,then stopped then it kicked the trolley upwards and then ran backwards for 5-6 seconds
tryed it 3 more times and just did the same every time.
so ive removed head and redone the valves and decoked not alot as just oily
deglazed bore ,and rings were all in line so off set the splits in the rings,
reset the valve gaps shimmed up then when back together ish turning the engine over by hand, the spark was 1/8" after tdc instead of before tdc
so removed mag and set the timing 15-20 degrees earlyier, remounted mag and got it to the book first go
stuck it all back together again.
first pull nothing
second pull nothing
third pull realsed , conected the ht to plug , not back to the magneto
4th pull it fired and ran

well the thing is the block and tank has been hammerited and badly slapped on with a yard brush me thinks
thick and runs every were , but cant see any rust ,so may just do the covers in a dark matt green , as it was before
and go for the reconditioned army look

Running nicely
I'd like to get a big J.A.P. one day, lovely engines. Don't see many of them about at the rallies round here.

Tempting, but you're quite a long way from me. I've got family up Cheshire/Stoke on Trent way.
Besides, I think the wife would have a fit if I got any more engines
