Re: petter a 1943
I see you've sorted the fuel problem, have you found anything else yet?
I was just thinking about you Richard "the Petter man" as I've just won a Petter of ebay only got it because it was cheap.

location
its good when you find them close to home, the cost of collecting them is something you have to think about these days. this engine came from a place called low laithe in nidderdale and only about 15 minutes from my house. what are your plans for you latest purchase.

Re: petter a 1943
Not sure yet what I'm going to do with it yet Richard as it was just a stupid bid I put in. I'll see if it's running as the seller states it's not been run for a few years, see what it needs to tidy it up, if it's a lot I'll just leave it for now as I have other engines to do first.
Like you say it's good when there not to far to collect this ones about 20 miles from me, but things never turn out easy bet it's out in the sticks miles from anywhere
Richard does it look bigger then the 1.5hp or is it just me

Re: petter a 1943
it looks like a 1.5hp or a 3hp. my 5hp has an inbuilt oil pump with oil lines on the outside of the engine, i can't see any oil lines on the picture.

its a runner
i got the engine running this afternoon, fresh petrol, new plug and the repair of several bodges. the engine fires up a runs well then dips in power and nearly stalls then runs back up to power again. now that i know the engine is a runner i can strip it down and give it a proper rebuild.

Re: petter a 1943
well if the tap leeks it money down the field or garage floor
and with my petter A`s, it still holds about 2ltrs of fuel in the tank when theres none getting to the carbs
well it keeps the crap out of the fuel tap filter and fillerbowl longer lol lol

Re: petter a 1943
Glad you found nothing amiss Richard, so what next, strip and paint or rebuild?
A leaky tap can also get you into trouble on the rally field if the marshall spots it and after all, we want a peaceful day at the rally so we can relax in the sunshine.

update.
a few more jobs done today, the new tap arrived and has been fitted to the carb, the threads being damaged from the araldite meant re cutting them at 1/4bsp so that the tap would fit and the carb top would not be wasted, a leaky tank followed so has been sealed, (i will have to keep an eye out for a spare). with the valves re-cut and a new head gasket made it now runs very well. at sometime in the past the engine has been repainted, so i think a repaint will be on the jobs to do list.

Re: petter a 1943
Richard I managed to collect the Petter A1 I won on ebay yesterday. I haven't looked at it properly but I think it's a 5hp but can't make the plate out very well, so I need to see if I can clean it up and get it in a good light to check it properly and get the engine number.
As far as I can see the only damage is a big dent in the petrol tank so that will need replacing. I am happy with it as it came with a starting handle and a flat belt pulley so them alone are worth what I paid for the engine.

Re: petter a 1943
I believe that the 5HP models had the same bottom end as the PAZ1 diesels Stu, they had an oil pump and external oil pipework.

the bottom end is the same as a paz1. the pipework is on the outside of the engine.

Re: petter a 1943
Thanks for the info guys I'll have a look and see if it has the external pipes. Are the 5hp very common or did most people go for the diesel Petter when it was the bigger hp? I'd like to find out some history on this engine as the area I picked it up is agricultural yet it also a small but busy fishing town 2 miles away so it might have some interesting history.
