Lister D Restoration Project

Latest restoration project picked up. Needs a replacement silencer, some broken out bolts used to hold down the hopper cover drilling out and retapping, replacement cover for the magneto and a long overdue oil change. Need to get the paint off the fuel tank to see what condition the metalwork is in.











Also need to get rid of the orange HT lead and the plug cover.

Below is the serial number. I assume that since it has a DH in the serial number that it is post 1950. Is that correct?


The only thing that seems to be holding the drain tap in place is ptfe tape. Looks like I will have to drill out the mounting plate and put in a 1/4" BSP helicoil insert as the original thread has rusted away a long time ago unless anyone knows where I can get a replacement mounting boss for the tap.

The starter handle is a homemade job so I will need to look out for a proper one sometime.

Regarding the tap why not drill it out and re tap thread to 1/2" and use a 1/2" tap instead , matt

If I can get the mounting boss out of the block I probably will do. However, the head of the boss is quite badly mangled (very old damage). I do not want to drill it larger than I have to if the boss is still in the block. Need to get the sandblaster out to remove all of the paint around the boss before I try to remove it (at least give myself a fighting chance).

good luck with that .... mount on a plank or some 3 x 2 and drive a car / van on it to hold it down .... as it can be flipping tight !

David the DH stands for hopper cooled,if i could get into my smaller shed i could date the engine for you....but it jammed full,till i get it emptied i cant do much for you..sorry...

Not running at the moment but probably due to the spark plug being dead (arcing everywhere inside but at the end spark gap!). Awaiting arrival of replacement.
Spark tester has shown that magneto is ok.
The engine has good compression.
1/4 can of WD40 and use of freezer spray has resulted in me now being able to turn the fuel tap on and off.
Successful bid on silencer on eBay so that should arrive in a few days time.
Flushed through all of the rust and sludge from the water hopper and done a light descaling.
Hopefully in about a weeks time I will be able to test start it.

Great news David that you've got the spark, so a quick check of the fuel system and and systems go, fingers crossed that you don't find any problems once it's running.

Media blasted engine parts today. Used crushed walnut shells as blasting media. Good for car panels, not so good at multiple layers of stationary engine enamel (it has been repainted at least four times in the past).



Blasting has revealed crack in rocker cover. Have to look out for a replacement. At least the fuel tank is ok.


New tap fitted. Drilled out the old tap hole using a 15mm blacksmiths drill and then tapped out to 3/8" BSP and then used a 3/8" to 1/4" reducer to fit the tap. Have to look out for a larger brass tap that will fit as I will be waiting forever for the hopper to drain with this one.


New HT lead made up and spark plug fitted. Oil changed in engine (it certainly needed it).

it is a in line suppressor mate or its a voltage booster i have seen them for sale on fleebay

Where do you get the crushed watnut shells from? I've seen them used on a tv prog to clean car panels so less damage is caused, I might try them myself when I do my next engine repaint.

The unit on the HT lead is a spitfire spark booster. Came of an old set of car HT leads. Thought I would try it and see if it does actually make any difference.

Thanks for the link David, I take it you get a lot for you money with them being so light, the write up sounds good to use on all soft metals. I need to get my shot blasting stuff sorted as I bought it a few months back but not tried it yet.
