another two new projects.
a 5hp petter a1 and a standard i.5hp, the 5 hp runs well and the 1.5hp needs a new head gasket and a good clean.
the 5hp will be left as is, i shall wait and see what the paintwork is like under the gunk on the 1.5.

petter a1 update.
the a1 is coming along nicely, a new head gasket and a replacement magneto. the engine is seen here after a good cleaning, next step is to overhaul the carb and pipe up the tank.
more pictures to follow.

Nice work Richard, have you decide if your painting them yet or leaving?
Mike there's a Petter on ebay ending soon that I'm watching, (local) it's a bit different being petrol/parrafin.

Hi Richard, I am just restoring a 1.5 hp A1 at the moment as well! I am missing the little pushrod that goes from the governor through the timing case and actuates the curved bar from the carb, could you post a pic of it with the measurements please so that I can manufacture one? Just ordering some rings for mine as they were stuck solid in their grooves and even after a long soak they still snapped.

the 5hp is staying as it is,( i replaced the red points cover with a rusty one ). i will repaint the 1.5hp as it has been repainted at some time and the paint was not the best quality, the orange is original i think.

Re: another two new projects.
That's fine thank you richard, I am guessing that it is just a straight rod or does it have a plate on the outer end?

the inner one inside the governor has a plate on it, the outer one is plain shaft, there should be a ball between them.
the 2 shaft parts are arrowed in this shot

Re: another two new projects.
Thank you Neville, I guess that the ball gets lost into the sump when the magneto is removed! I see that some A1's have a spacer between the mag and the timing cover, mine doesnt as the mag bolts straight on.

you are right, mine is the one with the spacer between the mag and the engine, yours may be different to mine.

Re: another two new projects.
the 1.5hp a1 is now a runner, filled the carb gave it a couple of turns on the handle and away it ran. sounds good no nasty noises just need to make up a fuel line and then i can give a longer run.

Re: another two new projects.
fuel line now fitted, the petrol tap inner needs replacing (it leaks). i cant find the governor spring and threaded piece that goes through the timing case so i'll have to make a replacement.
its all good fun.

update.
hello everyone,
the petrol tap has been repaired and a new fuel line fitted, the engine runs well but the carb needs a bit of attention (new gasket) as it leaks. the engine can then be cleaned properly and prepared for paint. i'm thinking orange as i found it under several coats of green when i was removing the dirt, orange looks to be the original colour as their was only primer under it.

ready to start thinking about paint
the engine is now running well, the new gasket has been made and fitted, the petrol tank started to leak along one of the seams so it has been fixed. i am happy with the work so far just need to clean and prepare for paint, still not sure what colour to go for though. i will probably leave the painting until the spring time when it will be a bit warmer, gives me plenty of time to choose a colour.
thanks richard.

You must be pleased with it's progress and I have to agree it's not the best time to start painting.

Now you tell me Stu! Guess who is trying to paint both a Petter A1 and a Bernard W2 at the moment, I can do the small parts indoors but the main crankcase is in the garage where it is taking two days for each coat to dry.
