Re: spark plug
Could be to rich or the wrong heat range plug, Champion 8com or D16 is a good plug for a D or a Lodge BBL.
A Little load may help it as well.
Cheers Steve

Re: spark plug
hi doris..
my mate has the same problem with his Lister D...
i borrowed it for 3 shows,i belted a small corn mill to it and it didn't miss a beet.
you mite try turning the mixture back, once you have it running turn the mixture down slowly..
if this doesn't work try putting a load on it,you could get a 12volt dynamo and belt it up..
this should sort it..
please keep us posted on how you get on...
regards..mike.

Re: spark plug
Shame he's asking about a Lister A guys
Sounds as if your running a bit rich.
What number plug is fitted?
If you try this site it will give you alternatives to try, so look for a hotter plug.

Re: spark plug
check as well the return fuel pipe isnt blocked as that will make the carb flood and the excess fuel will go in the engine making it run very rich(the black smoke will be a big clue if this is happening..

Re: spark plug
Should be running a Lister A on a Lodge BBL plug. Also as everyone else has said sounds like its running rich. Turn the needle to about a quater turn or just over to start up, and then once warm turn the needle down a little very slowly bit by bit. If the engine sounds like its starving just click the needle back one notch. As Mike said it will run much better with a bit of load on as well.

Re: spark plug
Also make sure after start up that you adjust the carb.
Carb more open it means less fuel and more air, carb more closed it means more fuel and less air.
I always close my carb about halfway when starting up, and then once started and warm, and also with a load on I open the carb fully.

Re: spark plug
as brasso say my lister A will only run with carb air bit open about halfway otherwise it will just stop and fuel control about 1/2 turn open once running but as each valve is diffrent on each engine best way is once running turn down fuel control until it starts to slow then open it up a small amount thats how it should be to run ok and if a load is put on the flywheel then the throttle will open up and engine should pick up cleanly if loads of black smoke its to rich if it just open throttle and stops mixture is to weak only way is to run the engine and keep trying until you find its about right..dont forget a warm day will need a richer mixture than a cold day
