i just used my angle grinder with a small wire brush, no pressure and just let the brush do the work.

Earl,
if you want to straighten the tank without resorting to hammers you could try low pressure air in through the tank tap, and cover the cap with your hand, the pressure should be enough to "pop" the tank roughly into shape.

the tank
i thought of that, but the tank has creases in it, so i thought i would paint it the best i could and keep a lookout for another or something similar to fit later.

black paint
its high temperature exhaust paint, it is sprayed on and has worked well on all the test runs.
