Ruston Hornsby BPR 4hp
Hi folks, I picked up this Ruston Hornsby BPR the other day and was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of any manuals/literature relating to them?
I have contacted Ray Hooley about a previous engine but, sadly, this time I received an automated reply saying he is unwell. It would’ve been nice to find out the provenance but this now seems unlikely.
The engine appears to be in pretty good, honest condition, with no cracks; albeit missing the guard.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Hello and welcome!
That looks a lovely honest thing, and good that the agents plate has survived.
What are your plans? Oily rag or full resto?

A warm welcome to the forum.
Nice find.
I have a few RH manuals but sadly not that model. Hopefully someone else can help.
Please start a new thread in New Projects/Restorations when you get going.
Good luck.

Hi,
Thanks for the welcome.
At the moment, I’m undecided. Ordinarily, I do like to go the whole hog on a project but for now, I’m just oiling and gently freeing everything up. I’d like to get it running before I make my mind up. I freed up the valves yesterday and it has great compression, so it looks very promising.

Hi Woodsman,
Thanks for the kind welcome.
I will be sure to start a new post. At present, I’m tentatively oiling and freeing all the moving components. It does appear to have been well looked after and certainly hasn’t been stored in a hedgerow, so I’m hopeful that it shouldn’t prove to be too problematic.
I did see that thread, thank you. I’m undecided, as of yet, whether I’ll make it a full restoration. Ordinarily, I would but, for now, I’m slowly working towards getting it running and I’ll go from there.
