Hi All

I've just joined from Cambridgeshire, having acquired a Ruston & Hornsby PR Size 110.  I've always enjoyed model steam, visiting rallies, etc., and when this came along I couldn't resist!  But I don't really know what I've bought yet - it's my first stationary engine.  The engine is in reasonable condition - all moves freely, some compression and the plug generates a spark - but I've not yet tried running it because I thought I'd try to first learn more.  Could anyone help with the following?  I've tried searching online but with only limited success.  Apologies if I've missed obvious resources.

I've read about IP (industrial paraffin) and AP (agricultural paraffin) but what does the PR refer to, and is it the same as BPR?  I know about the small petrol tank for starting and the switchover to petrol - I guess these days I can start and run it on petrol?

How does the class 110 relate to the rated horsepower?

The killer question is, does anyone know where I might learn about running/maintaining it?  I've seen copies of original manuals on ebay for other R&H engines but not the PR.

Just for info, the engine plate gives the no. as 142480, and the supplier as Francis Bugler of Beaminster, Dorset (who are still trading!).

Any pointers would be much appreciated.

Best wishes,

James

Hello and welcome! welcome sign

According to 'The A to Z of British Stationary Engines' the PR was introduced in 1922 as a cheaper push rod (hence the name?) version of the side-shaft AP design, but I can't see a reference to 110.

Hi James and a warm welcome to the forum.   Compression, spark and some history - luxury !!

Please start a new thread in New Projects/Restorations when you get going.  Good luck

IIRC Member miley_bob had a PR. He hasn't been on the forum for a while but might be worth an email.
