Not unusual, I had lister's that were so bad it blocked the water ways, when you've cleaned all the flaky metal drop a handful of tea bags into the hopper, with water in, and run the engine for an hour or so, the tannin will coat the metal and slow the rust forming.

I often use a solution of citric acid (kettle descaler) to dissolve rust then as per maryaclice to prevent re-rusting

I only found out recently that iron oxide was magnetic. The plumber explaining why my central heating boiler wasn't working stuck a magnet on the 22mm copper outlet pipe and it stayed there !! When the pipe was cut open it was full of iron oxide on the inside of the copper pipe, and also very heavy, the hole through the pipe was barely wider than a pencil.

Funny you should say that, I'm having a new boiler fitted next week and it comes with a magnetic filter.

Just before I stop my engine I squirt two shots of oil into the hopper, when the water drains it deposits a thin layer of oil in the hopper and waterways.
