Hi All

I am restoring a Norman T300 MK2 and I am missing the flywheel.

I know it’s a bit of a long shot but does anyone have a Norman T300 MK2 flywheel tucked away in a shed that they don’t want ?

Thanks Calum

I might have one, remind me to check sometime Smile

The Mk2 engine should have a parallel shaft, whereas the Mk1 had a tapered shaft.
The two different flywheels are not interchangeable !

Please check your flywheel shaft, report back, and then I'll have a look for you.

OK, good start (I asked because some of the very early Mk2 engines used up surplus Mk1 shafts). By the way I can date your engine if you send the serial number.

Right, I have 3 Mk2 flywheels.

The Mk2 engine flywheel has an aluminium centre with a woodruff key to secure it. It is known for the hardened steel key to cut the soft keyway in the flywheel like a boring tool cuts a workpiece centre hole on a lathe. It was a particular fault in the Mk2 engine.

Two of the available flywheels have this fault. It would be possible to have the flywheel keyway rebroached in another part of the bore if you know of an engineer who can do keyway broaching. A flywheel damaged like this would be very very cheap.

There is one flywheel which is brand new old stock. This flywheel will be very expensive. So if you can get keyway broaching done then that might be the cheaper option.

If you are not in a hurry, I have another Mk2 flywheel which will be removed from an existing engine due to a bent crankshaft. The condition of this flywheel bore is currently unknown as it is still on the engine. I am waiting for a T300 Mk2 to make its way up from "Appletop's" shed to my shed, for a flywheel transplant, but this may not be until the spring (as it's a very long drive for me).

Where are you based?

Hi blue cat
Just sent you a PM regarding the flywheels... I hadn’t realised they had this fault!

Any information would be great the engine that I am restoring is TA5152.
I also have a MK1 TE 1318 and a SC 7434
All the help is much appreciated!

Thanks Calum

Hi Calum

T300 Mk1 TE1318 - no recorded information for this engine. Year of production was 1940.

T300 Mk2 TA5152 - Supplied to Auto Diesels Ltd, of Uxbridge on 7th September 1951, originally fitted with a Wico A magneto.

SC SC7473 - Supplied to Auto Diesels Ltd, of Uxbridge on 31st March 1952, originally fitted with a Wico A magneto.

Auto Diesels Ltd was one on Norman's largest customers, they built most of the Norman engines into generating sets for sale to their customers. The T300 could drive a 1.25 kiloWatt set and the SC a 550 Watt set.
