E5 or E10 for a Lister D

Now that we are being encouraged to use 'cleaner' petrol I am wondering whether my Lister D will notice the difference between E5 and E10. My instinct is to buy the higher octane E5 but happy to hear your views.

Considering they were around when pool petrol was something like 40 octane I'm sure they will be ok.
Just drain the fuel before storage and run the carb dry and they should survive.

My understanding from extensive research as iv got a few old motorcycles is that it’s not the quality or the octane that you really need be concerned about it’s the amount of ethanol as it can cause a lot of damage to carbs and seals, personally on all my old bikes and anything else with a vintage engine il be using e5. Yes it’ll cost a little more to buy the petrol but in the long run it’s the cheaper option considering what a rebuild will cost.

Should cause no more damage than e5 if you burn it off, let it sit in the tank/carb is when you'll get issues from what I understand.

Thank you all for your thoughts and suggestions. I think I may use E5 and avoid the ethanol. Not entirely sure though to be honest.
A related issue.....someone suggested to me that it matters not whether you use E5 or E10 but it is important to use upper cylinder lubricant added to the fuel because modern fuels are so 'different'. I'm no chemist, mathematics is my thing. What say the chemists and/or fuel experts?

Take the rocker cover off and squirt a load of oil over the valve gear, job done.
Never used any form of additive in 40+ years with no noticeable issues

Thanks Appletop, I do that already. I will continue and probably use E5 fuel going forward.

I’m willing to be corrected but doesn’t E10 have more of an effect on synthetic seals and pipework rather than metal? For the short length of time and frequency I run my engines then I’m not sure it will make much difference, especially if the engine is run dry with no fuel sitting in the carb. Interesting to see other comments.

E5 means 5% ethanol, so using E5 is not avoiding the ethanol

Hi, my understanding is that any fuel that is between 0% - 5% has to be marked as E5. I do believe that one of the big suppliers does still produce E5 fuel which does not have ethanol in it but does not guarantee it, in all locations. It is more likely to have some ethanol in it in the north of the country, due to the distribution centres only having 5% available. Might be worth checking what is available wherever you are based.
