converting a DK back to a straight petrol
hi all i have a DK kicking around here, am stripping it down soon, it was a later converted d, so think all i have to do is remove vapourisor, swap carb and exhaust around and change guvoner rods, can anyone confirm this is all i have to do, also if a D is running on petrol only but has the vapourisor fitted , what effect can this have on the engine, its just ive had 3 Ds now and all 3 have been DKs but running on petrol they seem to run so fast does anyone know why these happens

Hi Ryan
Petrol Parrafin engines usually have different ignition timing on them, you'll need to check your Lister D manual to be certain, but i'd have thought something like if a petrol is 20 degrees, the parrafin will be 15 deg btdc.
i'd have also though that a hot vapouriser will possibly cause pre ignition or possibly self detonation in the carb, but surely lister factored in for that. i guess if the fuel is vapourised, then it is more volitile and will explode more violently and generate more power therefore more speed.

Don't forget that the DK will either have a flat topped piston or 2 cylinder head gaskets to lower the compression ratio, though I would imagine that it shouldn't affect the running too much.

the DK piston may also have an extra piston ring, though i'm by no means certain.

Ryan, Just take the Vaporiser off and set timing it will run fine, Listers sold the Vaperising kit to fit on standard Lister D's as an opshion.
The kit consided of a Vaporiser and Gasgets, Small tank like a brasso tin, 2 way tap and pipes with instructions for seting the timing and fitting.
I have a brand new kit as it came from the dealer

WHY?
Id rather keep it as a DK. Much more unusal machine that the standerd D type, and if u have a local suply of Heating oil, much cheeper to run as well.
DK normaly tend to make more money to at the point of sale, so i fu want my ADVICE, keep it as a DK, u wont be disapointed.

hi james its just personal preferance
ive had 3 dks now, and have not liked any of them, as they just run to fast to help burn up the parafin, lots of people have tried slowing them down but no joy, really just wanna put it back to petrol for a mess around really .
Re: converting a DK back to a straight petrol
my grandads old DK wouldnt run slow on TVO (but it is worn up) but the DK i sold a few years back, would tick over slower than most straight petrol Lister D's. A lot of it is down to the mix of TXO. I USE 4 GALLS OF HEATING OIL, 1 GALL OF PETROL, AND EGG CUP OF 2STROKE OIL. cant beet it. if you dont like DK's, rather than spoil a wounderfully cheep and ecconomical engine, why not sell it of P/X for a straight petrol lister D. either way, a DK is worth more than a D so you should be quids in.
