Re: Clinton 2.25 HP
Got the Clinton running OK.
Turned out that the Air vane governor linkage had become disconnected from the throttle lever. Cleaned some gunk out of head and valves and now all tickety boo. I don't want to spend $35 + postage on new 'decals' (as our transatlantic cousin call 'em) so I think I'll just give it a good clean and apply some clear lacquer.

I have used 'Titch' (Dave Sanders) a lot over the years, usually good service although I ordered some decals a year ago and haven't recived them yet! Maybe I should jog his memory?

First time I have used him, it was about a week from emailing the image to getting the decals

Quick test run: Click here
Need to have a tinker with slow running and mixture but we have guests this weekend. Maybe I can talk the girls into going shopping.

Re: Clinton 2.25 HP
Paul,
You can buy the necessary material for your printer to make your own transfers/decals, I've done it several times and its easy to do, re your comment about the Petter and your engine, it may be able to produce half the power of the Petter but has to rev its nuts off to do it, guess which one will last the longest

Re: Clinton 2.25 HP
Quite right Maryalice. I wouldn't expect to see the the Clinton running after 100 years of service.

Re: Clinton 2.25 HP
Next question.
When I whipped the head off some of the outer layer of the head gasket came adrift. I bodged it with some flexoid just for a test run but now need a permanent solution. Can anyone recommend a suitable high temperature sealant that that I could put a thin smear of onto the metal layer?

Paul,
Dont use a sealant, you can get asbestos free head gasket material, make one its not difficult.

Re: Clinton 2.25 HP
You could also look at Lauson and Tecumseh spares as the design stayed basically the same when the names changed over the years.

Re: Clinton 2.25 HP
I think I may know what's going on.
I took the cowl off again to try and find where the air vane governor spring might fit. The cowl is held on by some of the head bolts so, to avoid any damage to the head, I loosened them all off. I decided to investigate lack of compression again so refitted head and bolted down - then I find that the bolts 'bottom out' when the cowl isn't fitted. I wonder if a previous owner had thought the gasket was duff and slapped some sealant on?
Any how, I reassembled and, belt and braces, put Thackeray washers under the bolts.
Tada!! - it runs and with governor attached it doesn't run away. I will still pursue the search for new gasket.

Re: Clinton 2.25 HP
Were there any washers on the bolts when you got the engine?, they tend to have the thicker (Form A) washers on head bolts.

Re: Clinton 2.25 HP
Nope - I used Thackeray washers simply because I had eight of matching diameter and thicknessRobotstar5 wrote:Were there any washers on the bolts when you got the engine?, they tend to have the thicker (Form A) washers on head bolts.
P.S. I've been to The Thackray Museum in Leeds - not a washer to be seen.

Re: Clinton 2.25 HP
The recoil starter often fails to return the whole length of cord so I thought I'd open it up. Big mistake! I managed to dislodge the mainspring which flew across the shed nearly taking my eye out! (Note to self, wear the bloody safety glasses - they're right next to you)
Now have very sore thumbs from winding it back in. Still doesn't retract completely.

Re: Clinton 2.25 HP
Some of them have a gap in the recoil disc to allow another turn of cord to be put on, there's a few Youtube videos mention/show how it's done - Mustie1 springs to mind.

Re: Clinton 2.25 HP
OK. Despite not finishing cleaning up the shed, the Clinton is back on the bench. Head gasket material on order. Scraped the remains of the head gasket off and started to clean up mating surfaces.
As regards painting crankcase. Flywheel seems to be seized on shaft but I'll persevere for a while. T'other end is some sort of drive plate (?). Peering down the hole I can see this - any idea what sort of fastening this might be?
