Straight 30 would be my choice, after the crankcase has been given a good wash out with paraffin to remove the years of sludge! Laughing

I usually use Comma Classic 30, not cheap but a good oil.

i personally use castrol xxl, this is SAE 40 non detergent oil. i found that SAE 30 oil was too thin and i got a haze of blue smoke, with SAE 40 that went. some one on the rally field said the lister recommend 'lister oil something or other' for summer running which was equal to sae 40. obviously the heat of summer makes the oil thinner, since most rallies are in the summer might as well stick with sae 40.
what i also heard was that the indexers used to mix oils can be bad for bushings and oil engines in general so what ever it is stick to straight, classic engine oils.
hope this helps
Callum

(PS: i had about 2 inches of sludge under the main bearing for the flywheel, along with seeds, leaves and well preserved vintage insects!!)
