Coborn or Wisconsin? Empty Coborn or Wisconsin?

Post by keith rees Wed Jul 02 2014, 17:37

I have been asked to recondition an engine of unknown name and origin.
Most of it is there. Part of the cooling ducting is missing as is the output pulley. A cracked inlet/exhaust flange needs to be welded.
It has been suggested that it may be a Coborn or possibly a Wisconsin.
Looking on Youtube there are many similarities that it's hard to call.
It has a Marvel Schebler carb, serial number TSX 147 . 43 . 9
It also has a Wico Type A magneto, serial number 71199
A small plate attached to the crankcase behind the flywheel reads 12-21. Below this is cast BA-44-M
If anyone can help identify this engine, I would appreciate any information.
I've tried to attach a few pictures but 'copy and paste' doesn't seem to work.
Regards,
Keith Rees.

The Coborn engine was possibly derived from the Wisconsin engine, either under licence or otherwise.
Coborn engines used a Solex carburettor, yours has a Marvel Schebler so is likely to be a Wisconsin.
A picture would help, but you need to use a hosting site like photobucket and copy the image from there.

Hi Blue Cat,
All the Coborn engines I've seen on the Internet have the makers name cast into the crankcase just above the output shaft. Unless this has been ground off for some reason, I can only assume it's a Wisconsin.
I would like to know if this is the case and what model it is?
It's my next project.
I'm only just in the first year of renovating stationary engines. I've got a Lister D type, a Petter Type A and a Ruston & Hornsby 6PS under my belt. They don't belong to me but I'm now 90% the way through another Lister D.
At this stage I'm just trying to collect any info I can on this latest engine.
I'm afraid I've never heard of a 'hosting site' or 'photobucket'.
Can I send my photos directly to you? There is only four at the moment.
Regards,
Keith.

With those casting marks I would say Wisconsin as well, I have a model AK lurking somewhere in a garage. Smile

Hi Pete,
I'm assuming the picture you enclosed is the Wisconsin AK you mentioned.
Apart from the front face of the crankcase (behind the drive pulley), my engine doesn't look like this one. The magneto faces the other way, the position of the carb and exhaust is reversed.
The base of the engine has a separate sump (similar to Petter A). There is no pipework below the mag.
I have tried to transfer my photos on to Photobucket as suggested by Blue Cat but I still cannot get them on to the Forum.
Surely there has to be an easier way to do this.
Why can't I just copy and paste.
I'm getting frustrated.
I don't expect anyone to be able to help me if I cannot show pictures of the engine.
Keith.

Does it look anything like this one, if so then it is a Wisconsin AEH.

Post by keith rees Thu Jul 03 2014, 20:25

Hi Pete,
Can I assume that this picture was taken last Autumn? And you have oak trees?
Yes. This is more like it although our engine has a fuel tank similar to the Lister D but everything else appears to be in the right place.
So it looks as if we have a Wisconsin AEH?
I take it you've dragged this one out for a photograph and it's still waiting for it's overhaul?
Have you seen many of these on the Rallies? Are they a rarity in England?
So many questions.
Now I need to get some info on the engine. Maybe a service manual.
If anyone has one of these and has info that will help get this running again, I would be very happy to here from you.
Regards,
Keith.
P.S. I belong to the Shrewsbury Steam Trust at the Coleham Pumping Station. We have a website, if your interested in some very BIG stationary engines.

Hi Pete,
It's me again.
Can you explain to me how you put your pictures on the forum.
I would like to show others what we are talking about.

If you look under the section of this forum called Notices you will see a heading called step by step photo upload. The photobucket instructions are part way through the thread.

Coborn or Wisconsin? Empty Re: Coborn or Wisconsin?

Keith that engine in my second pic isn't mine, it was found via Google.  Lister made Wisconsin engines under license for a short time in the late 1930's/early 40's to try and combat the 'threat' of  the Petter A Type and the Lister versions are fairly common at rallies.  The difference is normally in the carb and magneto, plus of course they are badged as a Lister and had an 'L' added to the spec numbers. Wisconsin engines tended to be fitted to machinery in the UK, the V4 versions were fitted to Balers and the singles to various horticultural machinery.  Mine is ex US forces (dated 1944) and was most likely fitted inside a tank, it had no fuel tank of its own (would be fed from the main engine fuel tank) and has a remote oil filler/dipstick below the magneto that the standard engine didn't have.  I have seen manuals on US ebay from time to time, may even be some available on-line?

Edited for link to manual!  http://www.wisconsinmotors.com:8080/wm/images/catalogs/wisconsin/adh_aeh.pdf

Pete.

Hi Pete,
First class reply.
Everything I need to know at this stage.
I will give the photo upload a try, see how I get on. Watch this space but don't hold your breath. Seems very complicated but it always is until your successful.
Thanks for the info on the engine and the link to a manual.
Will study this at leisure.
Will also pass on your comments to the owner. We couldn't decide whether we had a Coborn or a Wisconsin. There were arguments for either.
He now agrees with your findings.
I'm going to finish the second Lister D before I concentrate on the Wisconsin.
Doesn't stop anyone else from the pumping station from starting to take it apart and cleaning it up though.
The cracked inlet/exhaust flange has been welded, we need to source an output pulley, top part of the cooling shroud that's missing and maybe fabricate a new silencer.
Regards,
Keith.
