Petter A1 Identification Empty Petter A1 Identification

Post by Bob Russell Sat Feb 18 2012, 01:35

Engine plate clearly reads type A1 engine number 524249 5 BHP 2000 RPM.

This engine number is outside the listings, is it just a later model.

What would be the year of manufacture.

Will a type A1 service book cover this one.

If this is anything to go by it would make yours an A W series II built between 1945 - 1947

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Mine has - A1 serial number 1515202 - on the plate which would make it an A1 built 1956 which I reckon is about right.

THE A1 MANUAL
SHOULD BE GOOD FOR THE JOB
AS THE ENGINES ARE ALL BASICLY THE SAME INTERNAL
just some castings varies and the compression alter from petrol to tvo slightly
but the manual i have is a a1 a2 w1 w2 petrol and vapourising oil engines manual
the horse power difference is that your 5hp is 1650 rpm
and my 1.5hp is 750rpm
so a1 manual will do the job for you as nothing really changes from 1 1/2 -5 hp apart from boring diameter of cylinder bore for piston
but this should be stated in your manual anyway
if your still sruggling for a manual for it PM me ON HERE
and we can internet exchange my " PDF " manual to you
thanks kev

Hi All,

The best way to get Petter Dating (engines by the way ) is to drop a snail mail to the guy below, Send as much detail as possable with a couple of pics and he can date it and also let you know who it was first supplied to.

Keith Ott
80 Hobb Lane
Hedge End
Southampton
SO30 4GP

If you like drop me a line after you have details of your engine i will add it to my list and we can try and get a list going here, I tried on another site but got very little response. if i get a decent response i would publish it on here.

If anyone wishes to be include there engine in the list please feel free to pm me your engine details. At the moment i only want to concentrate on Petter A , and Petter A1, I would probably try and include other Petter engines as time goes on.

Below is what i would like to include;

Seriel No .......
Type ............
Known history .....
Date of birth if known .......
Owner name .........

Paul

Hi I have just bought an A1 ser 1544605, won't have it for a couple of weeks though.

the address you gave is not far from me at all, I live in Locks Heath and grew up in Botley, the post code should be SO30 though, I am pretty sure I used to deliver papers to him when I was a kid lol. How do you think he would respond to a visit in person?
Wouldn't want to be rude etc but would be nice to meet someone who knew something about the engine I have now bought.
Many thanks

Andy might be best to post a letter first and say your local and ask if you could call in to discuss it rather then just turn up on the door step. I'm sure you'll understand that if everyone local turns up on his door step he'd soon stop showing his address. Also if you get an invite you might get a tour of what he has, as for security reasons I wouldn't be showing anyone that just turned up on my door step what engines I have and I'm sure he'll be the same.
Don't get me wrong I'm not saying anything bad about you just suggesting the best way to go about it in my opinion.

Stu.

Ok thought it was worth asking for those reasons, you never know until you asl lol.

Re postcode, it is definately a typo in the mag then:
Tesco Express
Tanhouse Lane
Hedge End
Southampton
Hampshire
SO30 2SZ

is the tesco express 300yrds away, Botley/Hedge End are SO30. As said a typo then. Only reason I point this out is because I wouldn't want peoples info being lost in the post.

I really can't wait to get my new toy, realy quite looking forward to getting her to a rally, but she will need a good check over and a lick of paint first, also looks like my Dad is bringing some of his engines out of the woodwork for some play time so we are hoping to exhibit at a few of the Hampshire rallies and I would hope to meet some of you there.

Also re posting a letter for dating, is there a fee presumably and if so how much/what form? Would like to get all the info I can for rally info and personal knowledge Smile

Hi Richard and a very warm welcome to the forum.

To avoid spam you should not use your email address as username. To change just click Profile and Username is the first item.

The go-to-guy for Petter dating was Jim Perkins, but sadly no longer with us. Maybe contact Internal Fire museum?
FWIW My guess would be around 1948/49

Post by Petter1 Sun Apr 09 2023, 17:46

Hi Many thanks
Yes I’ve tried internal fire but unless you are already logged in with an account there is no access to records. Apparently the archive is closed down due to a lack of donations. Great pity.
I’m thinking the engine must be something like late 40s early 50s. The machine it’s on is patented 1928 but I can’t think it’s that old. And I can’t think it’s had a replacement engine as being a hand held hedgecutter I can’t think it’s done much work.

Many thanks Maurice for your advice. I’ve taken another look at it and it’s definitely an A1 and 3bhp. The machine it’s on was actually patented in 1936 so it’s obviously an engine older than that! I’ve attached a photo hoping that I have managed to o attach it! Richard

Hi, I've just had a quick check and it seems as though Stationary Engine Parts stock some spares for the Petter A1 series of engines. If they have what you require I don't know but it would be worth you giving them a call.
