Ruston 2VTH injector bleed screws.
My Ruston is leaking diesel from the injector pump bleed screws. I was given 2 new ones but they have a hexagonal head and will not screw down. I've put the old ones back with new copper washers, this has reduced the leak to a seep but I can't get it to stop completely.
It was suggested to me that I could file the hexagonal heads round so they fit down. Is this something people think is likely to work?

Try wineding PTFE tape round the threads this will stop it

The PTFE idea didn't work very well, but now I have a bigger problem.. I was bleeding these bleeding screws yesterday and whilst tightening one it sheared off, leaving the stud in the hole .. The stud has a hole right through it so I couldn't turn the fuel on and can't start the engine... My mate is coming over tomorrow with a set of somthing which he says is for removing studs, we'll see if it works. I've had no luck getting a correct set of bleed screws so i'm going to use the Gardner ones which are the correct thread but the heads are wrong, they're hexagonal and will need filing round to fit the Ruston... Not a happy bunny .. Also it means I can't charge the boat's batterys so i'm conserving power, not that there's much on tv to watch....

I'm pleased to say, the sheared stud came out very easily. I just used a thin phillips screw driver and tapped it in then turned anti clockwise and out the stud came.. Now just to do a bit of filing on the Gardner ones I have...Hope that goes as well.

Re: Ruston 2VTH injector bleed screws.
I contacted Longboat Engineering who specialise in importing Greaves engines (the Indian version of the Ruston & Hornsby). They say they should have the bleed screws to fit but went on to say that these pumps used various bleed screws and even knowing which pump it has will not define the type of bleed screw. They wanted the original screw to source the replacement. Trouble is the sheared one did the rounds of interested boaters and I can't remember what happened to it, not sure I still have it! The other bleed screw is not the original, looking completely different.. Oh dear, nothing is simple..

I've filed on of the Gardner bleed screws I was given so the head is round and not hexagonal. Fitted it today and it fitted fine, no leaks so far. Now just need to file another for the other pump.
