What is this

Hello there, i am relivily new to stationary engines. i bought this one as my first off of e-bay for 99p. i have absolutly no i dea what it is and everyone else i have asked doesn't have a clue either. the only sort of identification mark on it is a MV stamped next to the casting number????? If anyone can point me in the right direction i would be most gratful.

Whatever it was for 99p it must have been a bargin!!!!

Briggs and Stratton, possibly a model B or a later version. Made of cast iron, including the fan housing etc, and bloomin heavy! I have one myself. A couple of useful links.

and judging the photos, there identical we have a match

is yours stamped with an MV logo at all? they look really similar and from your photos i notice only a few differences.

for some reason, i seem to like the fly wheel alot, its a nice flat shape. I had a 420cc bsa once, great engines

Don't know if it's stamped to be honest! On the fan shroud there should be a brass tag but they are often missing, mine is. The only sure way of identifying the model is to measure the cylinder bore, it is either a model B, K, or a Z. The B has the cylinder and crankcase as a single unit whereas the larger engines have a detachable cylinder. Some have a crank start and others use a rope, they are a nice engine and run smoothly (usually)!

mine has a rope start but i have a few peoblems with the magneto, i need some new points and its earthing somewhere. When i bought the engine it was seized but i have freed it all up and it all moves nicely now. i need a new needle for the carb also so im yet to have her running. she is a work in progress, i also have a villers c12 that i have restored and its up and running nice. i currently have her providing electric in my shed, i always think its nice to have these engines working!

If it's a rope start then it's a ZZ. The others had a crank handle to start them, I have had 3 of these engines, lovely engines to work on but can be a pig to start!

Mines a model B and that has rope start.

A common problem with these is that (1) the points are set too tightly, the gap should be 20 thou and (2) that the points aren't closing completely, you have to set the little fibre block so that they open and fully shut again.
If you remove the flywheel make sure that you bridge the magnets with some steel etc, they are so*s for losing magnetism!
