Re: New to this
Hi Chris and a warm welcome to the forum.
BM191 on crankcase base would indicate a MK20 or MK25 - bore dimensions will confirm - with what looks like a 5.2:1 reduction gear. Picture looks like you are missing the carburettor. Do you have the tinware and tank?
Post a few more pics in New Projects/Restorations when you get going.
Good luck

Re: New to this
I take it BM191 is cast into the cylinder? I think you have a MK40 395cc engine, I don't have parts list for the MK40 but the MK20 and 25 are different part numbers. (CM1650 is the crankcase part No.) The MK40 has a 77.8mm bore, and a separate contact breaker box mounted on the crankcase.
It has a reduction gearbox fitted (looks like 5.2:1 ratio) and a flat belt pulley so probably drove something fairly substantial, possibly farm machinery?
Obvious bits missing are cowling, fuel tank and carb, and maybe magneto backplate?
Good luck!
EDIT: Beaten to it!

Re: New to this
Just had a recheck in MK20/25 manual - CM1650 is part number for the 5.2:1 reduction box adaptor.
Looking in the MK40 manual the reduction box is a different pattern altogether.
A picture of the inlet/exhaust side should reveal all.

Listed as 'crankcase' in the manual you very kindly sent to me? No. 1, halfway down page 25. As that and the crankshaft are listed in the reduction 'box section I assume they are different to the standard engine?

Blimey, you lot know your stuff!
I have just rescued this from my late father’s garage, but I have not found any tin ware or tank, or carb, any pictures of what they look like would help?

Re: New to this
Most of the tinware can still be found on ebay. L&S Engineers and a few other suppliers still hold some NOS bits.
Now you have the head off, measure the bore. MK20 is 63mm MK25 is 70mm Apart from cylinder and piston most other parts are interchangeable.
My MK25
Please start a new thread in New Projects/Restorations and I'm sure advice will come flooding in.
PM me with email address if you would like a copy of the manual and parts list.

Re: New to this
Hi.
New to this engine lark but always had an interest. Right place at the right time has plunged me into multiple ownership from day one !. I will have countless questions I’m sure, many of which may seem daft to some of you seasoned tinkerers but I’d rather ask a daft question than mess something up.
I have a Ruston 8PB, a Crossley 1030, an early Amanco Hired Hand air cooled plus the ubiquitous Lister D. My classic machinery weakness also means i am tripping over some early vintage mowers.
I will be picking brains over the Crossley to start with.........
Regards
Terry

Hi Terry and a very warm welcome to the forum. Seems like you had a lucky day!
Please start a new thread in New Members if you want to share a bit more info about yourself.
Ditto new thread in New Projects/Restorations and post a few pictures once you get going. Good luck.
PS Don't worry about daft questions - daft answers are much worse, as I know from personal experience.
